What is Justice?

Some call it Karma
Balancing the cosmic scales for wrongs committed
Others think of it as revenge
An eye for an eye...
Still others refer to it as the good that we can do
A counter-balancing opposite
As night is incomplete without day.
Some call it the metaphysical Yin and Yang of life
Whatever the name it is a mystical connection to Providence
Bending the arc of events toward the right side of history.

Is it personal or universal--
Or can it be both?
When we right our ship of life
Do we not reset the course for humanity
ever so slightly?

Where do wars and earthquakes fit into the dicussion
Must we rise up from our ashes of disaster?
If so, how?
Sometimes death is a blessing
An end to suffering while finding new beginnings.

Preachers and clerics tell us to pray for forgiveness
and for courage;
Philosophers caution us not to ask to know for whom the bell tolls;
Pagans and hedonists dance to the music of life;
Humorists say that no good deed goes unpunished--
Laugh with them.
They all seem to be linked back to a universal calling
To follow our own star
Toward the same source.

When we fall do not stay down--get up
Examine life
Seek out better answers to challenges
Accept opportunities with respect
Leave a smaller footprint on Nature
Love one another
Give thanks for the gift of life.

Only then dare we say
We are on track to our destinies
whatever our beliefs and
Justice will take care of itself.
