Life
Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do and die.
--Alfred Lord Tennyson in the Charge of the Light Brigade.
Life is wonderment, life is bitter
It discloses little, yet asks much
from you and me. As in...
Into the valley of death rode the 600.
Where what and why is the source of
such demands?
Is it for God and country?
Is this the way to Enlightenment
the road to eternal bliss?
Servitude blurs our darkest moments:
Why must we be brave enough to die
for a cause neither asked nor told?
Emanating from the souls of
those who reek of Greed and Ignorance?
Could Providence have a hand
in such Shenanigans?
Ah, but ours is not to reason why
To uncover flaws or deceit
Only to find the emperors have no clothes
There is no time to examine Life
When the bullets are flying
and blood runs deep while it gushes.
That is why we each must
ask ourselves now about
our priorities and
our Resolve
And who is worthy of our Trust?
Whether this is the best of all worlds
or the worst is too clumsy
a question. But...
Are we at our best or our worst
when we give up the choice about Life
before the fight begins?
Democracy was supposed to change that, especially to leave autocracy behind. But the powers that be seem to have managed, at least here in the United States, over the last 70 years, to take the wisdom of the people away and place the power back with kings and emperors, only disguised with the robes of justice.
These are trying times and your poem shows it very well. We all have to stay close to what science tells us and what is right and fair. Not what is stupid and unfair. Simply that. If we do that, we will not be running off and doing anymore silly wars so that wealthy people can get more wealthy while we shed blood and their children have a dynasty to live on without working.
