Where Ignorance is Bliss

When the world gets too confusing--
He finds another one that fits his version of Shangri La;
When others ignore him
He escapes to his private world;
When accountability confronts his low self-esteem
He flies away on his magic carpet to the land of Oz.

Psychologists say that is what 2-year olds often do
When they can neither understand nor deal with reality--
They make their own
And things for them get "all better."

We expect more from 3 year olds
And lots more from those age 5
And by 6 or 7 it's
"Welcome to the real world
Where pain hurts and mad dogs bite."

It's when he turns his world of make-believe
Into his private world where
He is King and nobody dares to doubt him
When he doesn't want friendship
He wants approval.

It's rare and not easy for us to detect
the real from his imagination
When what used to be so cute is now
Dangerous to you and me.

But when inherited wealth
And a record of failures has been
Made to look normal
Then it is too late for the obsessed
And very difficult for us.

A lot of make-believe goes into our elections
Especially when we vote
In hopes that it was all just in fun.
But no one is laughing nor on the run now.

He's the "unitary guy"
He doesn't understand friendships
But he loves loyalists
So the unwary accommodate him.

Crime rates are down:
So he calls up the National Guard
Immigrants are well-behaved:
He calls them rapists and murderers
Then he deports them.

The economy is tanking:
He takes from the poor and gives to the rich.
NATO works:
He abandons it.

Floods, fires, and hurricanes permeate:
He lets the states deal with them.
Our education system works:
He dissolves it.

Science is our best hope for the future:
He lets ignorance prevail.
What about Critical Thinking?
He asserts his version of the truth is
"the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth."

They say the "unexamined life is not worth living":
He says "You're fired."
The best and the brightest are leaving in droves:
He proclaims "Perfect."

Economic and social projections are pointing down:
He reverses the charts
And fires the analysts.

So now his cabinet posts are loaded
with incompetent buffoons
He croons "Where ignorance is bliss
'Tis foolish to be wise."
