Winter is Coming...

by Kalikiano Kalei — Read all 118 poems by Kalikiano Kalei

North Dakota, formerly the exclusive land of the Sioux Nation, now contains an as yet not fully quantified energy reserve under its prairie vastness. Back in the days of the Cold War, it was known more commonly as the home of Strategic Air Command's nuclear bombers and missiles, poised to obliterate the Soviet Union. I was at one of those bases, named Minot. As a native California boy during winters there, I learned much about myself and developed a great respect for the healing spiritual powers of extreme cold in that raw landscape.

Poem Artwork

Winter is coming

On chill days

Such as this ,

My mind returns

To creaking icy

Banks of the

Souris River,

Rambling through

Forested thickets

In the depths

Of a North Dakota

winter, many,

Many years ago.

Oddly, there is

Still a sharp aroma

Of creosote lingering

As I wander among

My recollection of

The frozen river’s banks.

Mingling with pine

And utter, bitter cold,

The acrid fragrance

Still drowns my

Latent senses,

Some 55 years hence.

Under my issue

Arctic Parka

I am impervious

To the sting of

Bitter cold but

Each crunch of boots

Through icy crusts

And boughs reassures

Me, brings me

A strangely bucolic

Peacefulness.

God has briefly

Pulled me away

From bombers and

Missiles, laden

With nuclear death,

To savor the perfection

Of nature’s subtle peace

In this intoxicating,

Heavenly scented

Winter wilderness,

So far from home.

Your poem reminds me of my training days in the Air Force. I cannot forget all those icy cold days at Chanute AFB, Illinois. Our flight commander marched us to school in the bitter cold. I still recall the cadence, "Go, go 55th, go mighty 55th..." It was undoubtedly the armpit of the Air Force for me since I favor the tropics. Anyway, despite the faded memory, I still enjoyed your poem. Well done!

You have recreated and shared the sharp contrast between nature and the pursuits of man and his war "toys" which are deadly. Well done, Kalikiano. All the best to you,

Regis (Reg) 🙏😎🌎🌳🐬

K^2: We have shared memories, almost. I never got farther north than the hills outside of Duluth, but that was cold enough. But the temp dipped to -40, or so, nonetheless. I could never translate the coldness, parkas, and muc-lucs into poetic charm as you have. The memories alone chill my bones down to the marrow. The bite and the fight are still there. Sensational write. Ed

This is such a vivid sensory description
Of this “intoxicating Heavenly scented
Winter Wilderness,”
both chilling and beautiful…
You have captured the atmosphere
with such skill…

Peace,
Diana…🍃

You captured the scene with stark realism right down to the creosote used to make railroad ties and bridge structures made of wood impervious to insects and rot. I was there with you and have experienced nearly the same. There is something pristine and lonely about bitter cold in the dead of winter when sound seems to carry miles further.

I would have liked to see more of the starkness of the landscape away from the river where the endless land meets the endless sky, unbroken by even a tree.
