Francis saw his native country
full of greed and love of things
and he pondered weak and weary
how to make the people sing
and it came to him a vision
of solemn festivity
to build a scene of living worship
of the first Nativity
he wrote a note to friend Giovanni
to recall the memory
of the child born the first Christmas
to let all the people see
He who came was born as they were
born in poverty like them
when he came he was their Savior
lion lay down with the lamb
so he wrote Pope Honorius
for permission of the deed
to enlighten all the world
with the planting of a seed
In the town of Grecchio
he made a manger brought the hay
got an ox and ass and actors
the town came at the end of day
and with joy and with wonder
saw the scene as if in flesh

in 1219, the Fifth Crusade
to Egypt did Saint Francis go
to try to turn Malik al Kamil
to the Christian road
Jerusalem was just a dream
that some Crusaders had
they marched in glory for the Lord
but everything went bad
Saint Francis only preached of love
he knew what it was for
he thought the Sultan was a fool
who only wanted war
but al Kamil was wiser still
and knew the horrid truth
that battle was without a doubt
to sacrifice the youth
there is no God but Allah
did the Sultan say
but Francis' only answer
was to the Lord to pray
Malik he would not give up God
and neither would the Saint
the just solution to be found
was only with restraint
negotiate a stalemate
where all people could be just
and live together harmony
not buried in the dust

Francis the son of Pietro di Bernardone
remembered the sound of cannon
the only reason he was yet alive
was to be held for ransom
in 1201 he'd gone to Perugia
a soldier in the war with the Umbrians
captured in battle at Collestrada
now sat in a cell like a mausoleum
the only reason he was yet alive
after all of his comrades had fallen and died
was because of his wealth and family
and now his mind was filled with an agony
for he knew that his God was a God of peace
and though all of his life was privilege and war
his heart was something that could not accept
what every man told him his fate was for
and so began his conversion to holiness
for in the dark fortress as black as the night
that led him to become Saint Francis the blessed
and walked out of prison and into the light
but he tried to return to the ways of his past
but step by step he returned to the Lord
and took on himself the holiest task
to take up his cross and give up the sword
on the road to enlist in the army Brienne
he had a vision that turned him around
and surrendered himself to the hand of God
and to the serenity of what he had found

Francis was a child of Italy
when he went off to war
born into a wealthy family
knew not what God was for
but captured he was made a prisoner
his journey then began
step by step the truth it came to him
he became another man
asking Jesus for enlightenment
the light came to his eyes
all his friends were full of puzzlement
when he abandoned his past life
he lived a beggar round Assisi town
renounced the ways of sin
rebuilding churches that had fallen down
and disciples came to him
he walked the mountains preaching to the poor
barefoot sunrise and sunset
to follow all the teachings of the Lord
and walk in Christ's footsteps
and to all people through eternity
he represented hope
becoming famous for his purity
with the blessing of the Pope
he tamed the wolf and brother of the sun
he preached to all the birds
he gave away all glory he had won
to spread the Gospel word
and when stigmata was upon his hands
and feet he did not cry
he came to us so we could understand
the how and when and why
St. Francis was his name and when he died
he left a promise clear
that when you're empty and lost inside
you'll find the answer here
I wish I could be like St. Francis
