After waking up in a graveyard with amnesia, Kara must try to piece together her life with the help of her sister. Leena is her only link to her past and the only one who knows what happened, so why is she being so mysterious?

Throughout the ride home, Kara noticed Leena throwing anxious glances at her through the rear view mirror. Leena seemed terrified about something and at first Kara thought it was perhaps she was terrified of  her sister being identified by Alex. But it was when Alex started to talk about a garden  that Leena abruptly changed the subject.

Kara looked out the window and wished she could just get out already. Her claustrophobia was kicking in and she didn’t want to create a scene in front of Alex. She closed her eyes and gasped as she saw another image flash before her eyes.

“Are you okay back there?” Alex asked.

She started to speak when she saw Leena gesturing her to remain quiet.

“She’s fine!” Leena said quickly.

“Hey, weren’t the exterminators at your house today?” Alex asked and took a turn to their street.

Kara looked at Alex. He sure knew a lot about what was going on with Leena. If they were that close, then why hadn’t Leena confided in him about the ritual that had brought her sister back to life?

Kara took in a sharp breath. She had just remembered something of importance and now it was gone. It was something about being in this car that seemed to rake up her buried memories.

“They’re using some odorless technique…thing.” Leena completed uncomfortably. “They’ve probably left by now.”

“Here we are.” Alex said.

As soon as the car stopped, Kara opened the door and jumped out. She had been suffocating in there. She eased as she felt the cold air brush her face. Now if only she could get rid of the itchy scarf over her face.

“Hey guys!” Sheila said coming up behind them.

Leena got out and walked over to Sheila. “Where’s Mattie?” she whispered.

“She’s taking the route leading to the back of the house.” She replied.

“Okay, take Kara with you and meet me in my room.”

“Aren’t you coming?” Sheila asked.

“I…uh…have to talk to Alex about something.” Leena said and averted her gaze.

“You should think about this.” Sheila said and Kara once again felt frustrated at being left out. Why bring her back to life if she was to remain oblivious to everything. Nevertheless, she couldn’t wait to take off the scarf and jacket and so followed Sheila reluctantly into the house.

“Finally!” Mattie said coming in from the back door. “Now can I have my jacket back?”

“Go take her upstairs, I have to make a call.” Sheila said and walked into a room.

“Great, now I have to baby sit you again.”

Kara frowned at Mattie and wondered why she seemed so indifferent towards her. Once they were upstairs and in the bedroom, Kara quickly discarded of her jacket and scarf.

“Why do you hate me?” Kara asked before she could stop herself.

Mattie looked a little taken aback with her question but quickly composed herself. “I don’t really hate you.”

“Yes you do.” Kara said. “I can feel it.”

Mattie took a deep breath and sat down on the bed. “Well, you’re probably going to remember anyway…”

“What did I do?” Kara asked sitting down on a swivel chair.

Mattie gave a short laugh. “You were a complete…how should I put this…uh…”

“I get it!” Kara said and frowned. “But what did I ever do to you?”

Mattie shook her head. “I was a little overweight a few years ago. You called me every word in the dictionary and made my life a living hell. But that’s not all.”

Kara looked down at her shoes as she started to remember. “Something about my friend…Derek?”

Mattie took another breath and let it out dramatically. “I had a little crush on him and you found out. The next thing I know, he asks me out only to dump me publicly in front of the entire school. You were the mastermind behind this, of course.”

“I think I remember that.” Kara said and she did. She saw herself laughing as Mattie cried helplessly while Derek called her more names. “Fatty Mattie.” She whispered.

“Yeah, thanks.” Mattie said. “I was in hell for the next two years. And then I was like, to hell with everyone!”

“I am so sorry!” Kara said.

“Right!” Mattie said and got up. “It wasn’t only me. It was everyone. Nobody liked you.” Mattie picked up her jacket and stuffed it her bag. “Can’t understand why Leena would want to bring you back after what you did to her.”

“What did I do to her?”

Mattie shrugged her shoulders. “That’s up to her to tell you. I’m making a sandwich.” She said and walked out of the room.

Kara swallowed and wondered what she could have done to her sister. She looked at the closet door and bit the inside of her lip. Perhaps there would be more clues about her past in there.

She quickly got up and opened the closet. Something in here would help her piece her life back together. She switched on the light and sighed with relief as she spotted a box marked with her name. She dragged the carton outside and opened it to find a few clothes, a trophy, magazines and a bracelet on top.

“This is useless.” She whispered under her breath, but continued to rummage through the box. Her hands touched something glossy and she immediately brought it out. Photographs! Kara got up and took the photos towards the window where she could inspect them properly.

She smiled as she saw a picture of her and her family eating ice cream. They all looked so happy. Even the man who was with them. Kara swallowed when she realized what she was thinking. Was it her Dad? If so, then why wasn’t he living in the house? Where was he?

She went on to the next picture and frowned. More pictures of the family in the park, the beach and a mall. All of them looked so happy. Who would have guessed a few months later, she would die. Kara caught her breath. If she could remember when this picture was taken, then maybe she would remember who killed her. She closed her eyes and found to her disappointment that she still couldn’t remember.

She looked at the next picture and saw it was of her and her friends. Derek and Wanda? The three of them looked so happy together as they stood in front of the carnival. They all looked so happy. She looked so happy.

Kara shuffled through the photos and felt her heart miss a beat. She went back and picked up a photo. It was of her and Alex. She continued to stare at the photo of her and Alex holding hands and laughing. The photograph dropped from her hands and she looked out the window to where she could spot her sister and Alex together.

Kara shook her head in disbelief as Alex and Leena hugged each other. Leena appeared to be crying and Alex was comforting her about something. Leena finally pushed away while Alex argued with her about something.

How could her sister do this to her? She stared down at the photograph and felt rage burn through her veins. Alex was her boyfriend! Had been her boyfriend! In six months not only had he moved on but also asked her sister out. Her sister! How could she?

This is really intriguing! I want to know how Kara was brought back to life again if she really died, who killed her, and why - although it sounds as though she made a few enemies, one way or another.

Good story.
