     The Vietnam war was a sad page in American history.

Hail to the American Soldier

 

Back in the States, hippies were making love, smoking pot, and protesting the war. They would burn their draft cards and the American flag, while we were fighting and dying to protect the liberties they were protesting. They called us war-mongers and baby killers. We called them a bunch of draft dodging momma pussy boy cowards, who didn’t have the guts to defend the liberties they were protesting.

The Vietnam vet was the only veteran who was spat upon and cursed for serving his country. We dared not wear our uniforms while on leave. Shame on you citizens for treating us that way. It was a bitter pill to swallow and left a bad taste in the mouth of all Vietnam veterans, as you can tell by the tone of my voice. It is a sad page in American history.

Hey, hippies, it was the politician, not the soldier, who screwed that war up.

Those who served their country knew it was the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin was draped by the flag, that allowed the protester to burn the flag.

Tks for your comment Ron. We were treated that way back then, but time is a healer. Of course folks don't feel that way now. My comment was an excerpt from a book I had written, telling of certain events that took place in my life.

I'm sorry that you are treated that way. I can see both sides viewpoint without getting into a brawl over it. Like our recent wars, we had no business messing in the Civil War that did nothing to protect our country and killed, maimed, and psychologically messed up a lot of your comrades in an environment that was totally foreign to you.

I was in college (not dodging the draft, I was there to get an education, unlike so many) and ended up being 1Y as far as my draft board was concerned. I never looked down at any of my contemporaries that went to Vietnam or treated them badly. I've known a couple that got very good jobs because of their service. Others that went into business or went on to college on the G.I. Bill.

If you have some stories about the war, I'd like to read them. This was merely a rant.
