What I'm thankful for.
Family is always the one constant in my heart. Four years ago my dad passed away, we are a close Italian family and losing him devastated us. Three years ago, our daughters moved out of state, another heart wrenching event. I'll be honest, the holidays were not the same. However, over time you adjust. My mom is doing better, our daughters are very happy in their new homes, and the rest of the family is well.
I've come to realize, we don't necessarily have to be in the same space to be close. We now Skype, Marco Polo and talk on the phone. We still love, need and cherish each other. We will always be a family, and we will forever have our past memories, while making our new ones.
I haven't lived close to any blood-tied family for decades, and have thought at times that both sad and yet todays normal. keeping close ties is harder for some when there is less and less physical contact, that is sadder yet. Thank you for your writing this.
With job opportunity and transportation, and with constant communication through all the media devices, holidays certainly aren't the same as they were, just 20 years ago. My family has been widespread for over 30 years, so getting together has become harder and harder. We still are close, primarily through email rather than texting or FaceTime, Skype, etc.
