My Dad was an aerospace engineer who worked with the Space Shuttle program for many years.
He would have had his face glued to the TV Saturday, beaming with excitement. What a show!
The return of manned space flight from US soil. A rocket booster landing on designated target on a barge less than an hour later.
And the two astronauts on the maiden flight had experience. Each flew on two Space Shuttle missions.
We now have hope that the US can carry our own astronauts to the ISS as well as supplies without the necessity of Russian involvement.
That we won’t have to drop returning ISS astronauts into the desert plains of Kazakhstan crammed into a Soyuz capsule resembling an old bullet.
Dignity, pride and finesse has finally returned to the space program.
And it’s brilliant.
It involves no mayhem, violence or illness. Just science, teamwork and discipline. Thank you, God, for a distraction the world desperately needed.
