“There is so much talk about celebrities shaving their heads these days.” he said. “I was the first one who did it, more than ten years ago. So why am I not on the cover of People Magazine?” He thought to himself. Such things never made real sense to him.
Like most people, Mike had a difficult time in differentiating between Hollywood tales of romance and heartbreak and his own mundane everyday life. For Mike, like most people woke up in the morning, took out that large jar coffee that he got such a hot deal on at Price Club and then went on to drink another cup of coffee that was to be just as dull as the rest of his day.
Work was never more than just work for Mike. It was mindless, meaningless and offered no real chance of ever moving up in the corporate ladder. He just sat their and watched Melisa, with her tight sweaters that made her average looking body more interesting than it actually was.
Thank God for those push-up bras, she must have thought to herself. But what would actually happen if someone was to actually take her out on one of these nights and then, just after all the wine and conversation undress her and find that what from the distance appeared like two firm grapefruits have in fact been transformed into lifeless sacks of sand that failed to withstand the impact of time?
A few months ago, Melisa thought about getting surgery. For some strange reason, men were magically attracted to voluptuous women. But she could never really afford such an operation. Two grand was what she had to pay for the operation and then the she would have to pay for all the subsequent medical care and maintenance that went along with it all. Most people never realized that implants were a full time job. Like a car they required annual checkups and the occasional fix up.
Mike sat across from it all and fantasized about that day when he would be the one to be featured on the cover of People Magazine. For years, he has planned on writing a novel. He would write a true crime kind of a story no doubt, about a simple man who had a simple romance with a simple girl from his office. She would be the kind of a woman that most men would just ignore. But not Mike nor his main character, they had long term vision. They knew how to look past all the bullshit and focus on what was real. “Maybe one day, after my novel comes out, I will take Melisa out for a drink,” he thought to himself. But that day never came around.
Melisa cried before she fell asleep last night. She just sort of cried every once in a while for no particular reason. Later, she brushed her teeth and read a magazine. They showed a picture of that famous singer who shaved her head last month. Apparently, she went crazy of something of that sort.
“If I only had enough money for an operation,” she thought to herself “Things just might turn around in my life.” Melisa turned off the lights and fell asleep.
Mike had another beer as he took out a fresh sheet of paper and wrote:
“Melisa was a beautiful woman who did not know that she was beautiful. Little did she know that in the month of November, winter will be near and with it so will love.”
