Susan sat in her living room watching the evening news on the wide-screen television. A news reporter was interviewing a man at a famous celebrity restaurant in Manhattan. However, to her surprise , the man wasn’t just another celebrity actor; he was her husband! She sat quietly in amazement as the reporter continued to interview him.
“What do you think your chances are at winning the ‘best
supporting actor’ Oscar for your debut acting role in (The
Parisian Connection?”
Jack responded with his head bowed, in a timid sort of way:
“I can’t believe this is happening…I never expected this!”
The reporter wished him luck as Jack abruptly rushed out of the restaurant with a look of concern on his face. The television cameras and the interviewer followed him.
Susan sat on the couch in a state of shock and bewilderment. She glanced over at the 8X10 photo of Jack on the grand piano and then back at the television where the reporter continued to interview other celebrities and cast members. With a sense of apprehension, she got up and went over to Jack’s private office--a room that they both agreed would be off-limits to her and the two girls, unless of an emergency.
Unlocking the door, she went directly over to his desk and sat down. She opened the top, right drawer—which was usually locked—but was left ajar this night. Leafing through the manila file folders, she came across one marked [acting class]. Looking puzzled, she slid it out and opened it on the desk. There were coffee stained pages torn from a movie script, with side notes jack had made. There were also numerous receipts made out to Jack in varying amounts of money covering a period of almost two years. Some for $200.00 and others for $500.00 and even more. The receipts were for “acting classes.”
A sinister smile came over her face which quickly turned to a look of disillusionment as she screamed: “That’s why he had a separate telephone line installed in his office…and the answering machine!” Swiveling around in the chair, she noticed the flashing red LED light on the answering machine and pressed the incoming calls button. A synthesized voice announced: “One…New…Message”
The caller was an excited woman, declaring: “Jack…you’ve been nominated for an Oscar! I can’t believe this! Who would have thought that a complete unknown in a movie shot in Paris, would be nominated! We are all going over to Sardi’s restaurant tonight at eight to celebrate. Be there!”
Susan had a blank look on her face, staring at the answering machine. “Why didn’t he tell me?” she wondered. Swiveling back around to the desk, she opened the center drawer to discover a passport and some airline ticket stubs. “How could I have been so naïve”, she thought. “That is what those European seminars were all about! How could I have been so blind?”
The sound of running water and loud thumping noises came from the ceiling overhead. She was startled for a moment and then realized that she had left the twin girls in the bathtub preparing for bed. She immediately ran up the grand stair case to find the girls having a water fight and throwing toys at each other. All she could think of now was to get the girls to bed quickly, before Jack came home.
Accomplishing this, she went into her bedroom, put on some sexy lingerie, combed her long blonde hair back in a pony tail, doused herself with Jack’s favorite perfume (Chanel#5)—which he sent her from Paris—and then rushed downstairs to set a romantic mood in the den. She put candles everywhere, lit the gas fireplace, burnt some exotic incense, and placed a bottle of champagne on the coffee table with two crystal glasses. This done, she laid on the couch and waited for Jack to return home from his “Bar-association?” classes in town.
Awakening from a light sleep, she was startled by the sound of keys probing at the front door lock. Then she heard footsteps tip-toeing in the foyer. With a soft, boyish tone; Jack called out:
“Honey…I’m home. Are you up darling?”
On approaching the den, he stood there in disbelief, seeing Susan lying on the couch--appearing to be asleep--with all the candles and the fireplace aglow. He cautiously walked over to the coffee table and attempted to open the champagne bottle quietly. Startled by the cork blast; Susan cooed:
“Ohhhh…I must have fallen asleep waiting for you. Did
class go allright?”
“Well…not exactly,” he said.
“What’s the matter,” she cried
“Susan….”
“Yesssss.”
“I don’t know how to tell you this. You know…I love you
very much—and the girls. And…well…damn! I have always
wanted to do more for you and them. I know that working
these long hours at the Firm has been tough on you guys.
I wanted to do something different with my life so that we
could have a better future. And I wouldn’t have to be tied
down to that Firm like my father was all those years. I
didn’t want to go to my grave like he did—a man who never
had a life outside the corridors of Wall Street. I wanted
something better for all of us. It’s not that I don’t
appreciate what we do have. Do you understand what I’m
trying to say?”
Susan’s eyes closed as tears streamed down her prominent, blushing cheeks. She embraced Jack lovingly as she pondered what she had originally planned to do by luring Jack into a seductive mood, and then to chastise him by releasing her fury upon him with every vile, verbal abuse she could muster. Instead, she said:
“Jack…let’s go to bed now. You can tell me alllll about it
in the morning.”
Snuffing out the candles, they took the bottle of champagne and the two glasses, and hand in hand they went up to their bedroom. They quietly caressed each other in a passionate way and finally collapsed into the king sized water bed. Entwined in each other’s arms and legs; they made wild and passionate love.
Later, while caressing each other in the afterglow of their lovemaking, Susan looked Jack in the eyes, in a most sincere way and asked:
“Jack? Can I be your ‘leading lady’ for the rest of your
life?”
