CHAPTER 1

The faint glow of the sun rose over the distant trees in the park. Susan jogged down the trail, like every other morning for the last five years. She loved the sights, the smells, and most of all the privacy. The park was empty, except a for bum or two, and the quiet soothed her nerves.
Susan continued running along the trail oblivious to any sounds, except for the music coming through her headphones. She passed a bum, who had his head shoved in a garbage can. She glanced slightly in his direction as she passed. Oh boy, breakfast. She smiled slightly.
Susan rounded the corner and looked around. There was no one in sight. Suddenly, some one hit her hard and she went crashing to the ground, sending her headphones flying into the grass. A man landed on top of her. Susan screamed in terror.
“I got her Billy!" The man shouted.
Susan, face down on the ground, kicked and struggled, but the man pushed her down harder. Two other men came running up fast.
The first man flipped her over on her back and she found herself being held down by two men. She kicked and screamed as the third man, Billy, stepped into her vision.
"Shut up bitch!" Billy slapped her hard across the face. "We just want to play with ya!" His laughter sent fear flying up her spine and tears running down her face.
Susan closed her eyes and prayed. Soon she felt her sports bra being torn from her body; the warm air struck her tender breasts like a spark touches the wood that ignites into flame.
"Oh yea!" Billy said. His hands were like ice as he kneaded her breasts like a block of clay. Susan screeched from the pain and Billy slapped her again.
"Come on baby! You know that feels good."
“Please Stop.” She pleaded.
Susan closed her eyes tighter wishing he would stop 'playing' and let her go. She shrieked in terror as Billy forced her legs opened and shoved himself inside her. Billy pounded her again and again.
“Oh yeah baby.”
Susan wanted to die as the other men chanted and wailed. “Fuck that Bitch! Fuck that Bitch! Fuck that Bitch!”
The pain in her body increased as Billy pounded her harder and harder and harder.
“Oh Fuck Yeah, Baby.”
He Slapped her again as she winced in pain.
“You boys want some of this pussy.”
“Yeah, Billy. She looks good.”
“Fuck yeah. This pussy is real fucking good.” He pounded her so hard her butt scraped on the pavement leaving bloody marks on the ground.
“Yeah, Billy, give that Bitch what she needs.”
Billy slapped her again. “Fuck yeah. You love this don’t ya bitch?”
“Oh God, please stop!” The words echoed through the endless void that was her mind. Visions of skulls, knifes, bright lights, everything and anything to take her away from the pain she was feeling. She thought of her mother, her father, her brother, and her friends. She thought of her cat left alone in this cruel world with no one to take care of her. The pain was still there but she was gone deep into her mind. Her body was ravaged for what seemed like hours.
Finally it stopped and her body went limp. Susan, however, was far from her body. She was lost.
“What do you do if some one attacks you from behind?”
Hands went up throughout the room. Mike pointed to one of the ladies.
“Try to break his hold.”
“Possible, but not the best thing to do. What else?”
“Scream bloody murder.”
“Yes, but not murder. Scream Fire. Studies show that more people will hear you if you scream fire.”
“What do you do if he has a gun?”
“Pray.” Everyone laughs.
“OK ladies. That may help, but it’s not required.” Mike started to pace the room. “You must kick, pull, push, bite, scream fire, do whatever you have to do to get away from your attacker or, heaven forbid, attackers. Give him your purse, money, car, whatever. Remember your life is not worth a few dollars and if he is going to shoot you anyway it is better to give him a moving target to shoot at because most felons can’t shoot straight anyway.”
The coward laughs again.
“But most of all always be aware of what is going on around you. Look, listen, smell, and feel your way through life.” Mike glanced at the clock on the wall. “All right, it’s almost 5 a.m. the sun’s almost up and I have to get back to my day job. I’d say this defense lock-in is a big success. Give yourself a big hand.”
The audience of young and old ladies applauded.
“OK. Mothers take your daughters home and be careful out there.”
The woman in charge walked up next to Mike and put her arm around him. “Let’s hear it for our defense expert Detective Mike Jones.” The coward went wild.
“Thank You, ladies. May the lord always keep you safe.” Mike takes a bow.
John stepped into the cold, sniffing the air. His cell phone rang. “Yea. I’m on my way.” He quickly stepped up his pace heading for the park.
John turned the corner entering the crime scene. A black cloud of blood and death hovered in the air. He sniffed it taking in the scent like a dog tracking his prey.
"Hold it right there, mister!" The officer stepped in front of him.
John flashed his badge giving the officer a sneer. "All right, detective." The officer quickly stepped aside so John could pass.
“Coroner on the way?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Seal the crime scene.”
“Yes, sir.” The officer marched off down the trail.
John walked carefully, hands in pockets, over to the first of three bodies which laid against the tree. The man’s pants were pulled down around the ankles exposing the lower part of the body which was plastered in blood. John kneeled down carefully examining the body closer. He noticed the genitals were severed off and removed. He looked around. Spotting a trail of blood on the ground, he followed it with his eyes to where the man's genitals were laying half buried in the grass about three yards away.
John moved the three yards over to the genitals and leaned over them. He stiffed the air around them. He than examined them tilting his head back and forth, but never touching or moving them.
"Excuse me sir," the officer asked returning from the car.
"Just a minute!"
The officer stared at John with a look of disbelief. “Sir?"
John raises his finger to his lips with a 'SHH' sound. He then got up walking carefully over to the other two bodies. The bodies were laying down flat on their backs. One had his eyes removed and the other had a large gash wound in his chest. John scanned the rest of the area. He then glanced up at the officer standing over his shoulder.
"Where's the woman?"
"What?" The officer looks stunned.
"The woman! Where's the woman?" John sneered at the officer.
"How do you know there's a woman involved," the officer crossed his arms accusely.
"Look here." John walked over to the two bodies waving his arms. "These two men are laying almost side by side. This suggest they were standing next to each other when the attack happened or possible, more then likely by the way their legs are curled under them, the were kneeling down side by side. Note the blood on the pavement between them. And if we look over here..." John walked over to the genitals laying on the ground. "Where the genitals have fallen suggest this man saw his attacker before he was killed. He was deballed and thrown, as you can see by the way the drops of blood are heavier here and where he landed, by his attacker into the tree where his neck then broke."
"Why would that suggest a woman?"
"Don't interrupt." John pointed to the genitals with steady fingers. "As you can see the blood is very concentrated right here at the stem of the penis. Also it is still glistening with liquid. Do you see?”
The officer gazed at the penis. The sunlight bounced off the droplets. “Yes, sir.”
“Finally smell that.” John moved his hand in a circular motion.
The officer took a deep breath.
“Now where’s the woman."
The officer glared at John for a brief moment before he said," We found her laying in the grass, about five feet from the bodies. Over there!" He pointed toward a broken cluster of grass. "Detective Jones got here first and took her to North General."
John walked over and inspected the cluster of grass. John stared content at the grass moving his eyes back and forth from the bodies to the cluster of grass. "Someone moved her over here."
“What?”
John waved the officer over. "If you look very closely you can see the footprints in the morning dew."
The officer bent down and looked where John was pointing. “I don't see anything. Wait right there," the officer reached toward the spot but, John grabbed his hand.
"Don't touch it.”
“Sorry, sir. I’m new to this just transferred from the academy.”
“Yea, whatever. Did you at least get a statement from the woman?”
“She was unconscious. Detective Jones said he was going to get one from her at the hospital.”
“Good! Did you seal off the crime scene?"
"Yes sir!"
“Well done. Wait here I’m going to scout for witnesses.”
“Yes sir.”
John walked toward the path as a man in a white coat came into the clearing. “Got a hellva mess for you to clean up, George.”
“Shit, Johnny when don’t yea.” George pulled out his camera as John continued to march down the trail.
Susan laid in bed with a Band-Aid on her nose, a big red hand print on her face, and a black eye. She turned toward the door as Mike knocked and peeked in.
"Your awake. Can I talk to you for a moment!"
Susan waved him in pulling the blankets up to her neck. “Sure why not."
“That’s the spirit.”
Mike came in and sat down in the chair beside her. I’m Detective Mike Jones. I got to get a statement for my report, you know, police business.”
“All right!”
“First question. What’s your name?” Mike pulled out his pad and pencil.
“Susan, Susan Thomas.”
“Well miss Thomas you are a very lucky woman.”
“Lucky, Hell he’s the only reason I’m still here.”
“Yes, god always save the good ones.”
“No, not god. My dark angel.”
“I’m sorry who?” Mike looked her in the eyes.
“My dark angel. He saved me from those basturds.”
“I see. Now, lets back up her a minute. Tell me exactly what happened?”
Susan sat up in bed a little. “Well, I was running down the trail like I do every morning. When those three thugs jumped me.”
“OK, then what happened?”
She stared at the wall and took a deep breath. “Well it happened so fast I’m not really sure. I mean one minute they had their hands all over minute. Squeezing, groping, pounding...” Tears started to trickle from her eyes. “They just keep tearing and ripping at my clothes. Laughing and shouting ‘Get her Buddy! Fuck that bitch!’ And Then...”
“And then he came?”
Susan looked up at Mike with glossy eyes. “Yea. It all stopped, like it was a bad dream. I suddenly felt myself being carried. I looked up all I saw was my own reflection inside a black face mask. Then I heard his voice say ‘Your all right now’. He set me down and disappeared back into the shadows.”
“He disappeared?”
“Yeah, He was like an angel. He come out of the woods and protected me. It was the strangest thing that ever happen to me. It was a miracle. He was my dark angel.”
“Thank you, miss.” He squeezed her hand. ”Get some rest. we’ll be in touch. All right?”
“Thank You, Detective.”
“I’m just glad your okay.” Mike stood up and walked out the door.
The Dragon’s Den was packed with people. Bill carried an extremely large tray of food waving in and out between the coward of packed tables. He headed toward a massive mural of a great red dragon. He stopped and knocked on the opened mouth.
The mouth opened to reveal a hallway. The hallway was lined with pictures of the club in various stages of its life. The pictures are lined in order from the 1950’s to the 1990’s. The last picture is of the current club owner Boris.
Lenny sat in a chair at the end of the hall. Bill hobbled up to Lenny trying his best to balance the tray.
“Assume.” Lenny ordered.
Bill tried his best to spread his legs without dropping the tray. Lenny stood up and frisked Bill. He then walked over and knocked on the inner door.
“OK?”
“Relax, kid. The boss just wants his dinner.” Lenny opened the door and Bill walked in.
Boris stood with his hands on his desk and Alonso sat in the chair opposite him.
“What the fuck do you mean he’s short this week? After all I have done for that mother fucker.”
“But boss I tried to warn him...”
“Fuck him. He’s done. I want him taking out tonight. You got it tonight.”
“You got it boss. I’ll do it myself.” Alonso stands up.
Bill knocks over the salt shaker on the tray and Boris and Alonso look at him.
“Well bring it here, man. Don’t just sit there in the doorway.”
Frankie Smalls stood with his face in the corner of the building. A police cruiser drove past him.
“Man, that was close. Old Frankie don’t need to be going back to jail so soon.”
He descended the steps as Tommy, a scraggy boy of about 17, stopped him half-way down.
“Tommy, my man, how you doing?” Frankie put his arm around the boy.
Tommy reached into his pocket, pulling out a wad of crumbly bills. He hands them to Frankie. “Please?” He eyes were dark and shallow.
Frankie takes the money, flipping through it quickly. He eyes move over the money counting every bill carefully. He stuffed the money in his pants pocket. He then reached into his inside coat pocket, pulling out a small dime bag. He puts the bag in Tommy’s hand closing Tommy’s fingers around it.
“Remember who always takes care of you.” Frankie smiled.
Tommy stared at his hand. He started to open it, but Frankie closed Tommy’s hand with his own.
“Come on, Tommy, Take it down the road.”
Tommy glanced up at Frankie, giving him a twisted smile. He nodded his head, turned, and descended the stairs, holding his bag of gold.
Frankie smiled. He started to descend the stairs again. A pure black Cadillac screeched to a halt in front of Frankie.
The door opens. Two men get out with semi-automatics in their hands, pointing them at Frankie. They discharged their weapons, as Frankie dives for cover.
“Oh shit!” Frankie runs toward the corner.
The sound of bullets rattled through the firing range. Mike raised his gun and fired off three rounds into the target. The target was set at thirty yards. He holstered his gun. Then he pushed the retrieve button on the wall, pulling the target back to him.
“Not bad for a rookie?”
Mike turned and looked at John. “Better than you, old man.”
John smiled, “Ya, well, a least I am still good with my knife.”
“Oh yeah, when was the last time you used your knife?”
John smiled again, “That’s classified.”
Mike stuck out his hand and John took it. “Good to see ya, Old man.”
“Good to be working with you, again, old friend.”
Mike smiled. “Come on let’s get some coffee.”
Mom’s Dinner was half-packed with the late lunch crowd. People eating and talking about various topics of the day. John and Mike took a table at the back.
Mom walked over to them smiling. “Afternoon John. How you doing?”
“Pretty good. Just give us a couple cups of tea, all right.”
“You got it, Sweetie. Nice to see ya back, Mike.”
“It’s nice to be back, Mom.” Mom walked off and Mike turned to John. “I see some things never change. She’s still as sweet as ever.”
“Mom, will never change. So, what did you get from the girl?”
“Not much, all she remembers is one minute she was being attacked by three guys and the next they were chopped meat.”
“Yea, I got that from the crime scene. It looked like it was only one guy. Strange!”
Mom set two cups of tea in front of them. “There you go boys.”
“Thanks, Mom.” John took a drink as Mom walked off. “So, what do you think, Mike?”
“Probably just some fool who watched to many Death Wish movies.” Mike smiled, Raising his tea high in the air. “So raise your glasses men and prepare to let loose the dogs of war.”
John laughed. “You always were a smart ass.”
“Yea, baby.”
John celphone rang. “Justice. What? We’re on our way.” John hangs up the phone. He stands up, tossing a five on the table. “Come on, Someone just let the dogs out.”
They headed for the door.
Marie shivered. Her nipples were frozen and she could barely feel her legs. The wind was blowing right through her tonight. The skimpy outfit she wore didn’t ward of the cold very well, but it did help her drum up business. She stumped her feet and rubbed her hands together. Eighty degrees in the afternoon and forty degrees at night. Florida winters, got to love ‘em. What the hell I’m I doing out here anyway.
Marie spotted a cop car coming around the corner. She started to walk. She was in no mood to answer any fucking questions tonight. Shake downs happened way to often these days and she was not about to get involved in any.
She rounded the corner of 9th and 34th. Three men were standing out in front of an abandon warehouse. This looks promising.
Kane saw Marie first, following her with his eyes. She swayed up to them slowly shaking what she had to offer.
“Hello there, boys.” She locked eyes with Kane.
“Damn, baby. What’s a fine girl like you doing out on a night like this.”
“Looking for a man like you.” She winked at him.
“That’s real sweet, honey,” He nudges the guy next to him, “You going to fuck us all right here.” The other two laugh.
“Yeah, baby you want us to whip ‘em out right her.” The man grabbed his crotch shaking it and the other man laughed.
Marie ascended the steps, pushing her tits up against Kane. “Whatever you want, baby.” She grabbed the other man’s cock, startling him. “You’re a big boy aren’t ya, Baby.”
Kane grabbed her, pulling her away from the other guy. “Wait a minute, sweetheart.”
“You wanta go inside.” She pushed him toward the door. “I can make you and your friends feel real good.”
“I bet that’s fucking right.”
Kane pulled her to him. They locked eyes again. “I don’t think so. If we had the time, but we don’t. Get lost, slut.”
He tossed her down the stairs. She landed face first, cutting her check on the bottom step. The three men laughed.
Suddenly, the shadows came alive and all hell broke lose.
“Come on Mr. Kirkland are you in or out.” Raven spun the suitcase toward Knox Kirkland, opening it. Inside the suitcase were stacks of hundred dollar bills. “One hundred thousand dollars. Almost twice what you make running that lousy school.”
Kirkland stared at the money. “Well...”
“Yes or no?”
“Yes.”
Raven shut the case, sliding toward Kirkland.
“Nice to have you aboard.”
Kirkland reached for the case as a knife struck it. Both men jumped to their feet, knocking over their chairs.
“What the fuck?”
The two men looked up to see a black figure jump off the catwalk. The figure landed a few feet from them.
Raven reached for his gun. The figure shot another knife into his hand, knocking his gun to the floor.
“Fuck.”
The figure glided toward Raven as Kirkland backed into a corner. Raven swung at the figure. The figure caught Raven’s hand, twisting his arm braking it. Raven fell to the floor.
Raven tried to crawl to his gun, but the figure grabbed him. The figure lifted him off the floor with one hand. The figure pulled a knife and Raven’s eyes grew wide.
“Oh God. Please don’t kill me.”
“You don’t deserve to live.” The figure raised the knife and slit Raven’s neck. The figure tossed Raven like a rag doll.
Kirkland watched in Horror as the figure walked toward him. The figure grabbed Kirkland. Kirkland started to cry like a baby.
“Please don’t. I’m not with them. they tried to bribe me. They wanted to sell drugs to the kids in my school. they wanted to pay me off. They...”
“Shut the fuck up.” The figure slammed Kirkland against the wall. “You’re no better than them. I saw you take the bribe. I will spare you, however.” The figure set him down on the floor. “But, if I catch you anywhere near these kinds of people again, I will be back for you.”
The figure left Kirkland laying on the floor crying.
Frankie Smalls laid in the hospital bed with a tube in his nose. He looked like a sideshow freak. His hands were chopped off at the wrist and his eyes removed. He laid there staring blankly toward the wall.
The door opened. Frankie turned his head toward the door. “Nurse?”
“No, Mr. Smalls. My name is Detective Justice. I wanted to ask you a few questions.” He sat down in the chair next to the bed, pulling out his notepad and pen.
“I see. Well I don’t remember much.”
“Well, tell me, what you do remember.”
Frankie took a deep breath. “Well basically I was shot at by two thugs. Then some manic jumped me and cut me into several pieces.”
“I see. Do you know who these two guys were that shot at you? Or for that matter why they would shoot at you?” John stared at the deformed man as he talked.
“I really don’t know.”
“So, what you’re saying is two thugs and a manic jumped you for no reason what so ever?”
“It is a dangerous world out there, detective.”
“Yea right and I’m fucking Mickey Mouse.” John jumped to his feet, leaning into Frankie’s face. “How the hell am I going to help you get these guys if you don’t tell me the truth? Was it a bad drug deal? Was it Boris’s men? Are you in trouble with the mob? Level with me or I can’t help you?”
Frankie turned his face away from John, taking another deep breath. “All right. All right. It was Boris. He sent those guys to rub me out. I don’t know who the other guy was.”
“So, what happened?” John sat back down.
“I saw the car stop and the men getting out. I ran like hell and that’s when it got bloody.” Frankie turned his face back toward John. “It was like a bad trip, you know. I heard the gun shots and jumped behind a Dumpster. Then it all went silent. I waited for something to happen. I waited for what seemed like forever.”
“Go on?” John wrote in his pad as Frankie talked.
“I had to look, you know. It was to damn quiet. I peeked around the Dumpster. That’s when I saw it.”
“It?”
“Yea, It looked like a man, but it wasn’t. It was dressed all in black and it had a motorcycle helmet on with the face shield down. So, I couldn’t see its face. Then it grabbed me and cut me up. It just kept cutting and slicing. Soon, I couldn’t see anything, anymore. The pain was overbearing and I passed out. And I woke up here.”
John looked up from his pad.
“Now you see it. Now you don’t. I wish he would have just killed me. Why didn’t he?”
“You can’t learn anything when you’re dead, Frankie.” John stood up and headed for the door. “I posted a guard at the door for your protection in case it comes back.”
“Thanks, but it probably won’t do any good.”
“Get some sleep. I’ll be in touch.”
Mike met John at the door.
“So did you get anything from him?”
“Not a whole hell of a lot.”
“So we got a phantom with an appetite for criminals.”
“Yeah, welcome home.”
“Exactly.” They walked toward the door.
Lamar opened the door to find Boris sitting at his desk with his feet up. “So what is it?”
“Raven’s a stiff, boss.”
“Really, and what of the money?” He pulled out a cigar lighting it.
“The cops took it.”
“I see, well you better find this fucker,” He threw the lit match at Lamar’s face, who ducked. “Or I’ll burn your ass. Got it!”
“loud and clear, boss.”
“Good, now get the fuck out of my office.”
Lamar got up, walking to the door. Lenny opened the door, let him out, and closed the door behind him.
“You think he’ll find the fucker, boss?”
Boris glared at his most trusted bodyguard. “Who gives a fuck. I’ll kill-em all if I have to. Dime a fucking dozen his kind is.” Boris stood up, walking over to Lenny. “Come on I got women to wine, dine, and fuck.”
They walk out of the office together.
Joann opened the door to find Marie standing on the other side. She let out a sigh. “And to what do I own the pleasure of this visit?”
“It’s good to see you too, Mom.” She waited. Joann looked her up and down. “Can I come in.”
Joann stepped to one side. “If you must.” Marie moved past Joann into the small apartment. Joann glanced to the left and to the right before closing the door.
“Did you repaint the kitchen? It looks real nice.”
“Yea a few months ago.” She stands in the doorway. “So do you plan to stay long?”
“Well a night or two. If it’s not to much trouble.” Marie stared at her mother with long puppy dog eyes.
“Stay as long as you want? I was making dinner hope you still like Taco Salad.”
Marie grabbed Joann around the waist giving her a hug. “Thanks, mom.”
Joann put her hand on Marie’s patting it gently. “You’re always welcome here.”
“I love you, mom.” Marie started to cry softly.
“I know dear. I know.”
