Shawn stared at the woman he loved laying in the heap of blood. Lightning flashed outside the broken window. The glass shattered on the floor behind him. He still held the gun in his hand. Smoke seeped out the muzzle like a smokestack.
“Damn it , Kate. I begged you not to run from me.” Shawn wiped the tear from his eyes smearing the blood on his face.
The storm outside was building as the storm inside him was subsiding. Shawn picked Kate up carrying her to the door. He kicked it opened and the rain slammed into him. He stepped into it like he would a shower. The rain poured down his face mixing with the tears and blood. He was half-blind. Kate’s blood flowed like a river from her chest wound.
Shawn marched across the front lawn. The tall grass stuck to his bare legs and mud caked on his shoes. The soft ground pushed deeper with ever step he made. His shoe got stuck. He yanked hard pulling his foot out. The shoe remained. His sock was soaked in a matter of seconds , but he did not stop.
The rain washed the blood out of his eyes, but to no avail. The rain was coming down so fast he still could not see. He walked on into the night knowing not where he would take his dead love.
He shot her in a fit of rage that he could no longer control. The anger that builds like the sudden storm he carried her through, now.
Why did you make me do this to you? I loved you. I would have giving you everything you ever needed. Everything you would have wanted? All you had to do is love me. The thoughts echoed through his head like a tiny cry for help.
Shawn stepped into the flooded street. The water was up to his thighs and he almost dropped, Kate. The water pushed at him. He grabbed Kate tighter around the waist. Kate’s hair spread out in the water showing the flow of the current.
The current pulled at him, but he would not let her go. She was his last grip of sanity in a cruel world. The world he made for himself. The world in which he could do no wrong. The world he could never return to again. His world was shattered with the pull of a trigger.
The water was getting deeper now. It had not rained for weeks and all the storm drains were full of dirt and sand. The streets were filling up like a bathtub. The current pulled harder and harder on Kate’s limp wet body. He tried to hold her but the current was too much for him.
He watched in horror as the current stole her from his arms down the river filled streets. He fell to his knees and the water covered his already soaked pants.
Why did you take her from me? Why didn’t you love me? What will I do without you? His mind was wondering. His mind was no more. His mind was seeping from the back of his head from the fresh bullet hole in it. He fell slowly into the water. His blood being carried down the river to join his love.
The cop holstered his gun. He had been too late to stop the murder of his daughter, but by god he would be damned if he would let the basturd live another minute.
