How small acts of support can have a huge impact!

When a friend starts a business, there’s often a bit of an unspoken dilemma: should we support them by buying their products or services at full price, or is it okay to expect a discount? This might sound like a small detail, but it can have a big impact on the success of that new venture. Interestingly, it’s all too common for people, especially close friends and family, to lean toward expecting a “special price” as part of their support.

I recently came across a thought-provoking story about two friends who launched a garment business together. One came from a working-class background, while the other had been raised in a family familiar with the ins and outs of business. When their store officially opened, each friend invited their respective circles to the event. The contrast was stark: the friends from the working-class family arrived with thoughtful gifts like bouquets to celebrate the occasion, while the business-oriented crowd simply bought items from the store. Their rationale was practical—by purchasing something, they were directly contributing to the store’s success. And it didn’t end there; they enthusiastically shared the business with their own networks.

This story reminded me of a recent experience of my own. A friend stayed at our Airbnb in Goa and paid the full rate. I didn’t ask for this gesture, but I appreciated it immensely. When they returned home, they didn’t just leave it at that—they recommended our Airbnb to another friend who runs a vacation planning business. That genuine support extended beyond just the booking itself.

These small acts carry a powerful message about what friends are truly for. Support like this goes far beyond gestures; it helps build a strong foundation for any budding business. And in a larger sense, it shows that they believe in your success just as much as you do.

So, next time a friend publishes a book, don’t wait for a free copy—buy it, leave a review, and help spread the word. If a friend launches a business, be their first customer and share their story with others. These small actions can be a big deal, and in the end, they might be the boost that makes all the difference. port.
