He always went for the fake.
Al Schacht, known as the Clown Prince of Baseball back in the “Old Days,” had a brother named Sal, who played in the early days of The National Football League. He was known as “Fake” because he always went for the fake.
Sal was fat, a huge hindrance in those days. Most fat guys were uneducated because they frequently broke chairs in the classroom, although Sal went to Harverd, on a scholarship to be studied.
Their demeanor of no education left fat guys with little hope for employment…so they looked to professional sports.
Baseball was too fast and sweaty.
Basketball was too fast and sweaty.
Golf seemed the ideal choice, except for the walking which was slow and sweaty.
Furthermore, golf carts in those days were towed by donkeys who sat down and refused to pull sweaty fat guys.
Hockey was played on frozen lakes, which were never ample to support fat guys. Soccer was un-American.
So many fat guys went to the newly formed National Football League.
Players in those days went both ways, which had nothing to do with their sexual preferences. Except for the fat guys. They played either offense or defense. Because of the sweating offensive fat guys got more offensive later in the games. Sal Played defense.
Most of the fat guys had heads too big for helmets. Facemasks were yet to be officially invented and only worn by “Sissies,” so there were many nosebleeds.
Sal was an instant success. He played behind the line in a position later known as linebacker, but in those days known as nothing. He could pick out anyone carrying the ball and pulverize them.
He gained instant fame and was invited to any facility he could fit into.
He seemed destined to enter into The Hall Of Fame, which itself was destined to become something?
Then it happened!
Someone invented “The Fake.”
Instead of handing the ball to a runner, the quarterback, (who was known as something else?) “Faked the handoff and threw the ball, (called a pass,) to another fat guy, (Known as a wide receiver, because he was wide.)
Al always went for the fake!
Throughout his career, he always went for the fake. If it wasn’t for the fake he would have been The Greatest Player Of All Time, but he wasn’t because of the fake.
He tackled guys at the one yard line, but it was a fake.
He blocked kicks, but they were fake.
He tackled guys behind the line of scrimmage…fake.
He sacked quarterbacks…fake!
Without the fake he would have been Great!
When he retired they gave him a trophy anyway…Fake!
Sal “Fake” Schacht will live in infamy.
That’s All.
