Bribed official sent to prison

Trenton: Former Assemblyman Daniel M Van Pelt was sentenced Friday to almost 31/2 years in federal prison for accepting a $10,000 bribe from an undercover FBI informant posing as a corrupt real estate developer.

"I had no intention of willfully committing a crime," Van Pelt said. "I needed to be better, but I wasn't. I'm so sorry for the cloud I put over my community that I love and the 9th (Legislative) District...I had no intention to take a bribe."
