That all time best seller, the Holy Bible, is all about stories isn’t it? Jesus even shared his own stories in the Bible. Consequently, storytelling could be categorized as a God-given talent which a few of us possess.

Another reason storytelling is powerful is because one story reminds us of another story, or personal experience, we have encountered. One story tends to trigger another. Just like with our emotions, human brains seem “hard wired” for stories.

Storytelling strengthens our imagination. To imagine is to see beyond what is readily apparent. The ability to imagine and envision is the basis of all creativity. The entire category of Fiction is all about telling stories, isn’t it? Creativity also creates the power of problem solving in many different occupations, learning modalities, and life situations.

When told in story form more information is actually retained. Consequently, storytelling is an incredible teaching tool. In the classroom, knowledgeable information is stored in a much deeper part of the memory within the human brain. Content that can be delivered through a story is received on an emotional as well as an intellectual level. Since oral storytelling is considered one of the better ways to educate and teach information, it can be used in all aspects of learning if applied properly.

By weaving storytelling into curriculum, Educators can tap into a deep need in the human spirit. It supports speaking and listening skills, also motivates writing and reading. It enhances students’ response to literature, history, science, social studies, and many other components of the curriculum.

Remember bedtime stories? Visualization at its best. The parent is taking the time to bond with a little one you love so much. For many parents, our days are filled with much rushing around, errands, etc. Taking the time in the evening to snuggle with a child through storytelling is a very special moment indeed.

Therefore, “Once Upon a Time…” should be retained, used, and cherished for the power it holds.
