The time is now to take action to protect America’s wild horses and burros.

 

 

 

The 2005 Omnibus Spending Bill recently signed into law by President Bush contained an amendment to the Wild Horse Act of 1971.

Slipped in at the last minute by Senator Conrad Burns (R-MT), the amendment mandates that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the agency that oversees the Wild Horse Act, sell "without limitation ... to the highest bidder ... any horse or burro more than 10 years of age" or those animals that have been "offered unsuccessfully for adoption at least three times."

This rider makes it inevitable that many wild horses and burros in the U.S. will soon be sent to slaughter.

Please let your federal legislators know that Americans will not tolerate wildlife being arbitrarily sold to slaughter houses.

Please phone, write, or e-mail your federal representatives and senators today, and urge them to reinstate protections for America's noble wild horses and burros.

Also, please write to the editors of your local newspapers, and share this message with other animal lovers.

Ask your federal legislators to protect our nation’s wild horses and burros by enacting the following measures:

Repeal the Burns amendment to the FY2005 Omnibus Appropriations bill;

Co-sponsor and push for passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act;

Stop the BLM from decimating wild horses and burros in herd areas;

Require the BLM to manage principally for wild horses and burros (as required by the Wild Horse Act). The primary use of herd areas should be for wild horses and burros, not cattle and sheep.

These magnificent wild creatures truly deserve our support; and they truly embody the noble, free Spirit of the Great American West.
