And Very Sadly, The Bad and The Ugly Far Outweigh The Good Today

The Good - From A Sick Homeless Orphan to A Now Cherished Firehouse Dog:

I just received this marvelous photo from my firemen friends. They had lost their beloved Firehouse Dog to old age last year, and they have been wanting to adopt another Firehouse Dog ever since. I was even attempting to help them find one.

But they recently found one on their own at a local ‘Kill’ Shelter. He was emaciated and sick, and he would not have had much of a chance at a new life without them. They adopted him, named him ‘Bull’ took him to an animal hospital, and nursed him back to health. And now, Firehouse Bull has found a new purpose in life, a brand new home at their firehouse, and an entire group of valiant firefighters to love and care for him.

The Bad – Far Too Many People Today Don’t Properly Care For Their Pets:

I received several phone calls last night about a poor dog wandering my neighborhood yet again. His ‘family’ doesn’t seem to care very much about him at all – they either chain him up in their yard, or they allow him to roam free at all hours of the day and night. And when I called their home last night to inform them that their dog almost got hit by a vehicle on a busy street – yet again – they were not even aware that he had escaped their yard once more.

As several of us were now out on the streets attempting to round up this poor dog before he did get hit by a car, his callous ‘guardian’ finally showed up, put him in his van, and took him back home.

The Ugly – Far Too Many People Today Don’t Spay and Neuter Their Pets:

This dog that constantly escapes his yard and wanders my neighborhood is not neutered, and one of the reasons that he escapes confinement and wanders so much is that he is visiting yards with female dogs in them that their ‘families’ don’t bother to get spayed either. And some people still wonder why we have such a huge pet overpopulation problem in this country today.

Several of us have told this dog’s ‘family’ that we would gladly get their dog neutered for them; and we’ve even offered to find their dog a new home if they cannot properly care for him. But they have repeatedly refused both offers. And they are very sadly not alone – I very sadly encounter this same type of attitude from far too many pet owners these days. I can’t even count the number of free roaming, uncared for, un-spayed and un-neutered pets, that I, and many others, have scooped up off the streets in the last several years.

We definitely need Mandatory Spay and Neuter Laws in our nation, and we definitely need far more responsible pet ownership today, if we ever hope to reduce the vast number of homeless and unwanted pets in our country.

Even sadder to me, many overflowing animal shelters in our nation today are now not even bothering to spay and neuter abandoned pets in their care before they adopt them out – they just have too many of them, or they don’t have sufficient resources to do so, or the animals in their care are now so sick that they either have to adopt them out very quickly or they have to euthanize them. My firemen friends had to take Bull to an animal hospital themselves to get him neutered after they adopted him.

Please Consider Being As Heroic As My Firemen Friends – Save A Life - Adopt A Homeless Dog. And Please Be A Responsible Pet Owner When You Do Adopt – Don’t Let Your Pets Roam Free – Get Them Spayed and Neutered – Get Them Microchipped - Care For Them As Part Of Your Family, Not As Disposable Objects.

Once again you have outlined what we have done to our obsessive love with our animals that we have turned into, "pets."

Ironically, as I read, I find the attitudes of people about other people run about the same as for pets. Either laissez-faire (what will be will be) or a concerted effort to turn back the clock to a time where bad things seemed good. We have people adamantly fighting any form of birth control and a human population growing so rapidly that it may crowd out all other species, including our pets.

Bull's story is a wonderful "rags to riches" tale. You've included poignant reminders about pet ownership responsibilities for loving creatures who deserve all the creature comforts of a nurturing home.
