What will happen if a fire or a flood or a tornado or a hurricane or some other devastating natural or man made disaster forces you from your home or from your neighborhood?

What if such a disaster should strike while everyone in your household is away from your home on business, at school, or on vacation?

Are you prepared? And are you and your family prepared to safeguard your pets?

If you haven’t already done the following things to safeguard your animals in the event of disaster, please get started today.  Then forward this to your friends and family and any other animal lovers you know to make sure they do the same.

1) Swap keys with a trusted neighbor who can get your pets out very quickly if disaster should strike your home or your neighborhood while you are away.

2) Keep a spare leash or two, collapsible pet carriers, pet food and water, and blankets in your car.  Make sure your designated ‘pet saver’ neighbor also has these items on hand.

3) License and microchip all of your pets to make their identification much easier should they somehow manage to run off during the disaster.

4) Identify at least one safe place that you (or your neighbor if need be) can evacuate with your animals – and learn multiple routes to get there.  Make sure your designated neighbor knows that you will meet him/her there to collect your pets in case phone service is no longer available in the area.

5) Keep a photo of each of your animals in your wallet or in your car in case you need to contact animal shelters and humane societies to locate them.
