As my two latest adopted pets, Little Jack – the once dumped and starving stray dog, and Valentina – the once abandoned and homeless kitten, now remind me of how thankful they are for their new home, I am once again reminded of this year’s Home 4 The Holidays Campaign.
It’s the tenth annual year for this massive national effort to find shelter dogs and cats a new loving home this Holiday Season.
This adoption drive began back in 1999, when the Helen Woodward Animal Center in California teamed with 14 San Diego area shelters to start the Home 4 the Holidays program.
That first year, they found homes for 2,563 orphaned pets. But that was only the beginning. Since that first year of this marvelous effort, this annual campaign has gone national, and even international, and it has grown into the largest pet adoption drive in history.
Last year, they set a new World Adoption Record with 491,612 Holiday shelter adoptions; but this year, they have raised the bar even higher.
Their goal now? One Million Pet Adoptions this Holiday Season.
And I truly hope that you can find it in your heart, to help. With our nation’s abysmal home foreclosure rates right now, thousands and thousands of extremely adorable and affectionate dogs and cats like Little Jack and Valentina now find themselves homeless, and they now languish in animal shelters all over America. And each and every one of them would truly love to find a new loving home for the Holidays.
