If you ever find yourself frazzled or stressed or otherwise 'not centered', then pause for a moment and practice breathing.
Although we may not notice it, when we are 'in our heads' and feel like we are running too fast our breath becomes very short and shallow. Notice this next time you feel tense, fearful or on edge.
When your breathing becomes shallow it creates a feedback loop with your brain. Your brain begins to panic, and your body responds with adrenalin and cortisol...which in turn causes your brain to get even more agitated. The end result is that you cannot think straight and life become generally uncomfortable.
To interrupt this cycle simply pause for a moment 3-4 times a day and take 10-12 long, deep breaths. Focus only on the air going in and out of your lungs. Breath in for 10 seconds, suspend your breath at the top for 1-2 seconds, then exhale for 12 seconds. The longer exhale is the relaxing part. When you do this your blood pressure drops, your nervous system slows down, and the parts of your brain involved with critical thinking 'come back on line'.
Anxiety, depression, anger, fear...all of these things can be mitigated by deep breathing. Plus, you will become for effective in meetings, work and daily life!
Right now, take a long deep breath and enjoy the fact that you are alive and well on this beautiful day!!
