"Unconditional Love" is a concept that virtually all religions have at their core. Yet in the application of the religions, or in the writings of their sacred texts, we also hear quite a bit of 'conditionality' in regard to who we should love and why. It gets confusing! Do we love without condition, or do we hold back our love from those we deem 'wrong'?
This notion of conditionality is extremely important not because of its 'rightness' or 'wrongness', but because it asks us to examine our motives for giving love. When we are conditional with our love we seek to receive rather than give. We look at the object of our love and say 'love me back'. In this sense love becomes an exchange.
When we are unconditional with our love we simply give...we expect nothing in return. Love emanates from us without any notions of what will happen. We love for love's sake, and when we do we experience the love that exists inside of us as a fundamental aspect of our nature.
Love is not a commodity...it is who we are. By giving love we affirm our very nature. And as we love those who harm us, who make us hurt, and who harm others, we affirm ever more strongly the love within us. We develop the practice of UNCONDITIONAL love and therefore bring ourselves ever closer to God.
This is what virtually every major religion tries to teach (with varying success). Love all, love unflinchingly, and love without expectation. LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY, and trust that this act has more power than you can ever imagine.
