When we have been hurt, one of the hardest things to do is to be forgiving. We mistakenly believe that by holding on to our hurt and anger we are punishing the object of our distress, when in reality we are merely creating pain inside of us.
The only way to regain an internal feeling of peace and joy is to let go of the anger, and this means forgiving those who have hurt us. This may take time, but in the end it is incredibly important. To forgive is to let go, and in this lies our freedom.
To be clear, forgiving does not mean condoning another's actions. If someone is cruel and mean, then we must be clear that these actions are unacceptable in our lives. We can separate from that person or communicate our displeasure, or in the case of society we can create consequences for that person (ie jail), but the key is to be able to do so without internal acrimony. We can choose our course of action in a neutral or, if possible, loving way, and avoid the negative internal feelings that come with anger and judgment.
Here is the key to your power. To be able to forgive while at the same time protect yourself. To create boundaries while not holding grudges. If you hold anger against another, see if you can let go and find internal peace. Behind your hurt lies joy!
