I hope you had a great weekend. Yesterday I was reflecting on the importance of 'self-care', and thinking about what it meant.
Every major religion has proscribed that at least one day a week be taken to 'rest and contemplate'. There is a reason for this, and I don't think it is merely to follow rules. The underlying purpose of a rest day is, to my mind, to allow yourself to come back to ground...to 'center' on what is important.
So what is important? Well, you are! Yet for many of us we put ourselves last. In my days as an entrepreneur I saw many, many people beat themselves practically into the hospital over a belief that they needed to work endless hours with no breaks. I personally ended up in the emergency room because of this belief.
The key to sustained performance and happiness is to know when to take a break...and to take that break very seriously. 'Taking a break' does not mean reading trade journals or doing 'easy work'. It also does not mean dulling the stress with alcohol, drugs or some other attachment. It means truly letting your mind and body roam and be free. It means doing something joyful and very personal. To take care of yourself is to focus on what is important and meaningful to YOU...and have fun doing it!
You cannot perform at a high level without self care. You cannot be there for others unless you take care of yourself first. Everything starts with you...take yourself seriously!!
