I am often asked about the difference between goals and intentions, so I thought I would answer that here.
For me a goal is something very specific, like "I am going to save $10,000 for my retirement this year". It has a specific outcome and a time frame.
An intention, by contrast, is very general. An example: "I intend to live joyfully and courageously", or "I intend to live into my highest potential". Intentions set the tone for your life, while goals are mileposts in the material world.
I think intentions are more powerful because they speak to a higher purpose and allow for many outcomes. Goals are nice, but we never really know if we will be happy when we reach the goal. For instance, what is the point of setting a goal to get a lot of money if, in the end, you are miserable? Many people achieve the goals they set...but still live very unhappy lives.
I am not saying we should not have goals. It may be more productive, however, to set broader intentions first and then make sure the goals speak to that larger purpose.
Have a great week!
