If you monitor your thoughts you will see that a great deal of emotional discomfort comes from thinking negatively about the past or the future. Anger and resentment are examples of negative thinking about the past. We remember something that makes us unhappy and then stew on it.
Worry and fear typically accompany negative thoughts about the future. We think of what might happen and then create stress trying to control an unknown future.
The challenge with this type of thinking is that it is a total waste of energy and time. The past is gone...it does not exist. The future is not here...so it does not exist either. We create these negative emotional states inside of us for no tangible reason. Most of the time there is absolutely nothing happening right now...yet we conjure up negative thoughts to create a state of discomfort.
Many times we have these thoughts out of a misguided sense of self-protection...believing that maybe if we think about negative things we can avoid them or 'make someone pay' for them. But the only person we hurt is ourselves, and we very rarely solve anything by ruminating on it!
So let go of thoughts of past or future hurts. Look around. Become present. Your current situation is usually never as bad as your thoughts would indicate. Look for the blessings around you. You are gifted with a life, and this is a beautiful thing. You are safe in this moment. You are ok. Develop trust that everything is happening for a reason, and that it will turn out well. When you can do this you will not only feel better, but you will increase the likelihood that everything will turn out better.
Right now!!! Look around!!! You are safe and OK and loved!!!
