It was recently pointed out to me that one way we cope with painful feelings is to deny the sensations in our physical bodies. We 'abandon ourselves' by trying to avoid feeling. This self abandonment can take the form of drinking alcohol, daydreaming, workaholism, shopping, or any other form of distraction.
The opposite of self-abandonment is self-acceptance. When we accept ourselves we accept everything about us...including the painful feelings that we have. We choose to feel the feelings and stay present in our bodies even when it does not feel good to do so. This is unconditional self-love and is the only way to live fully.
Remember one thing: In order to experience joy we must also be willing to experience pain. It is through the occasional pain of living that we find the unending joy of life!
