Transcending Duality

These words represent a higher way of perceiving the world, and when we exist in this space we become more powerful, expansive and creative.

Over the past few notes I have been discussing some of the various polarities that exist in the human mind.  As a review, the topics included:

Individual - Community

Safety - Growth

Confidence - Humility

Inner - Outer

Structure - Flow

 And these are by no means the only dualities.  Others include:

 Us - Them

You - Me

Good - Bad

Fear - Love

Open - Closed

Male - Female

Right - Wrong

 The common thread among each of these notions is the existence of a 'third option' that combines and creates...rather than divides and diminishes.  Examples of this combination:

 We

Us

Is

Feeling

Changing

Sharing

Being

Accepting

Forgiving

 These words represent a higher way of perceiving the world, and when we exist in this space we become more powerful, expansive and creative.  Dividing and compartmentalizing may be tempting to the mind (and indeed may make life simpler) but it does not represent 'reality'.  Reality is open, loving, inclusive and creative.  Reality is not black and white...it is an infinite spectrum of vivid color.

 This has practical implications in your life because when you live in black and white, when you cultivate duality, you diminish yourself.  As a macro example, countries that isolate themselves and divide the world into 'us and them' tend to languish culturally and economically.  Historically the nations that welcomed trade and immigration - including rather than excluding - tend to develop a financial and cultural richness that far exceeds what they could have done alone.  This concept is taught in entry-level economics because it is so fundamental to wealth creation.

 So if you want to create a larger self, if you want to expand financially, spiritually, mentally or physically, let go of duality and embrace the 'higher position'.  Look for ways to include BOTH in your life.   In relationship, find ways to conceptualize WE rather than YOU and ME.  In thinking, notice how your mind wants to simplify by dividing...and then see if you can include BOTH in your decisions.  When you bridge these dualities you open up a world of possibility and power...this is the true nature of 'reality'.
