The dangers of life are infinite,
and among them is safety.
-Goethe
When we think of doing something 'safe', we think that we are taking the risk out of a decision. For some of this it might be deciding not to do something, while for others it might be doing the thing that is most familiar or known. But in either case, and in fact in any decision, the 'risks' to our safety are the same no matter what we do.
Every action, decision or motion has the potential for infinite outcomes. Because everything is connected, even the smallest changes in the movement of an object cascades endlessly throughout the universe. Each and everything you do, think or say warps the world around you, creating a new version of the universe that is completely unpredictable. You may be able to predict some of the outcomes (like knowing that if you jump from a height you will hurt yourself), but you cannot predict all the potential ramifications of any individual action (such as meeting your soul-mate in the hospital while they fix your leg). Uncertainty, and therefore 'risk' is built into every micro-movement of every atom in the universe.
Throughout our lives we try to minimize risk by controlling our decisions. We look for the 'best' and 'safest' decision in order to feel good about what we are doing. We delude ourselves into believing that we can make an inherently uncertain universe predictable...and so we think and worry and stress and try to control the uncontrollable. And in the end we find out (usually by doing something 'safe' that does not turn out well) that we can't control anything and are forced to surrender to whatever has come of our decision.
The point here is not to avoid thinking through our decisions. This is the way we navigate the world and create powerful outcomes. But when we are deciding we can let go of any notions of risk or safety. We cannot predict what ultimately come of what we do. Sitting on your couch and hiding from the world can be just as 'risky' in the long run as bungee jumping in New Zealand! You cannot predict what ultimately will result from any individual action, so all you can do is make the best decision you can in any moment and let go of expectations or thoughts about the outcome.
When you do this you will find that you have always been safe...and always will be.
