This month Inc magazine published a remarkable article on leadership. Essentially, it points out that 'feminine' leadership traits are beginning to supplant and support the historical 'masculine' patterns of governance.
'Masculine' refers to command/control, decisiveness, hierarchy, structure, confidence, directness and urgency. The 'feminine' traits, according to the article, are:
Empathy (Being sensitive to the thoughts and feelings of others)
Vulnerability (Owning up to one's limitations and asking for help)
Humility (Seeing to serve others and share credit)
Inclusiveness (Soliciting and listening to many voices)
Generosity (Being liberal with time, contacts, advice and support)
Balance (Giving life, as well as work, its due)
Patience (Taking a long term view)
Feminine traits, in my view, make for not only a more effective leader but also a more pleasant experience for those being led. This is not to say that masculine traits are 'bad'. 'Harder' leadership styles can be very effective in situations where decisiveness and strength are required. The point is that a blend of the hard and soft creates the best of both worlds: A decisive, action oriented leader who people actually enjoy following.
The entire world, after a period of male dominance, is returning to, and re-valuing, the feminine. More women are entering the leadership ranks, and those being led are demanding a more loving environment in which to operate. Men are being asked to allow a more diverse, inclusive and softer leadership environment, while women are being encouraged to step up and claim their power. I see this as a welcome change, and a sign that we as a race are beginning to balance the consciousness from which we create.
