Anthony and Cleopatra is undoubtedly one of Shakespeare’s most complex plays. It defies classification. Shakespeare takes irony to one of its highest ascents in all drama. The classical allusions in this play exceed those of almost every other playwright. I like the different lens of Rome versus Egypt.
Anthony:
“All is lost this foul Egyptian hath betrayed me.”
The word Gypped is contained in the word Egypt.
The Roma or Gypsies of Europe are coming into England through the Chunnel and they are setting up camps in England and requesting homelands in England.
