Anyone in the Cleaning and Housekeeping business will know that accidents happen, and are common. From spilling chemicals, to employees or clients tripping over wires or slipping on polished surfaces, there is often only so much you can do to ensure a safe environment while you are working. Getting some kind of insurance for cleaners can ensure that your business is covered in the eventuality that a claim is made against you or your company. But what can Cleaner’s Insurance actually cover, and why is it so worth getting?
Public Liability
Public Liability Insurance is important when it comes to your cleaning business, simply because of the risks that your job may pose. The use of chemicals can be a risk to families with small children, or even to adults should they breathe in too much of what you’re using. Public Liability Insurance will cover from for any claims made by the public in the case of injury, illness or damage to property. Accidents happen in the cleaning industry, whether someone trips over the cord of your vacuum, or you spill chemicals that leave lasting damage to a surface, and so insurance can cover you from the eventuality that these accidents lead to claims against your business. Claims can start from as small as replacing a broken cup, to something as big as someone having been seriously injured due to negligence – after all, even the most careful employees aren’t immune from accidents and errors, so Public Liability cover will protect your business and its assets against claims and legal fees.
Employer’s Liability
If your business extends beyond you and to employees, contractors or even temporary or casual staff, the law requires you to have some kind of Employer’s Liability cover of at least £5million. Employer’s Liability can cover you against claims made by your employees against you against illness and injury that occurred as a result of working for you, and cover the costs of compensation or legal fees. If you don’t have Employer’s Liability Insurance, you can be fined up to £2,500 each day without the insurance. Some policies will even cover former employees who may come to suffer from illnesses that have taken time to manifest, and so while it is obligatory to have this cover, it is also well worth having.
What else could it cover?
Some policies will have added extras, including housekeeping insurance, cover for loss of keys to a property you are cleaning, and protection against financial loss for your business. There is also the option for Tools and Transit covers under some companies, which can protect your business against damaged, lost or stolen tools and vehicles that you may use for your business. So whether you’re cleaning homes, offices, upholstery or more, having some kind of Cleaner’s Insurance is well worth it for the level of cover that you can be provided with in the case of an accident or a claim.
