The Race by Clive Cussler

I listened to the audio version of this story on my road trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma from Festus, Missouri In October of 2012.

Cussler is an imaginative writer with a talent for creating unforgettable characters and meshing them with amazing historic contexts.

This story pits Detective Isaac Bell against a nationally connected gang boss known as Harry Frost. A flamboyant publisher the dawn of the aviation era and a cross-country race hosts the setting. With the competition between machinists, gangs, publishers, and the acclaimed Van Dorn Detective Agency, the backbiting, plot twisting, and double-crosses are flying rampant.

In the midst of this, the romantic pursuit of popular aviatrix and gang boss's wife Josephine Frost heats up the action. As suitors compete for her interest, their private motives complicate an already tense event. Josephine's spunky independence and unique courage make her a character readers will love. She contrasts nicely with Bell, who has an unerring courage, brilliant mind, and incredibly loyalty to his mission. Both characters will stay alive long with readers despite what happens to them in the story
