One day the cat, who was very proud of herself decided to clean her soft coat. She sat in the warmth of a lamplight and perched on a pillow. She was indeed very smart for choosing such a cozy place to groom. Even her master would not fault her for such a choice she thought.
As she took to grooming, she licked her fur and stroked her hair with a wet paw. THe silence around her was undisturbed. The warmth from the lamplight coaxed her like the sun, and the cat was very satisfied. She groomed her arms, her legs, her paws and her face peacefully.
But when she went to groom her hindquarters the cat noticed a darkness lurking behind her. The cat froze. Her eyes grew wide and her whiskers twitched slightly. She rattled her tail in warning and watched as the looming dark thing twitched back.
"I warn you looming dark thing," she growled, "my claws are sharp, and my bite is strong." The looming dark thing said nothing but only rattled its tail at her. Suddenly the cat didn't feel so safe and cozy anymore.
"Go away looming dark thing or I will attack you," she growled. The looming dark thing did not move.
The cat considered her options. With the lamplight now behind her she could see clearly that the looming dark thing was bigger than she. It only warned her silently that it might attack. The cat was not to be attacked first. "I will strike it before it strikes me," she thought.
She sprang from her soft warm perch with ferocity and might. Her claws extended, her voice spitting, her bright soft furr fluffed out to make herself bigger, she lept. She knew the lurking dark thing would not escape unscathed.
Whump!
The cat hit a hard wall and fell to the floor. She looked back up to see that the looming dark thing was gone. She was no longer on her perch, the soft place in the warmth of the lamplight. She was on the floor in the dust and cold without her pillow.
The cat considered that she had won. She scared the looming dark thing away with her ferocity. Her shadow on the other hand, knew very much better.
I like that last word with the root "fur" in it. Suits the story very well. You have a real insight into cat behavior. As well as human response to similar fears.
