Overcome the pain of loss

The emptiness inside you -

I know the emptiness you feel. It is as if someone has torn part of your life away and aimlessly scattered it in an empty field subject to the winds, rain and cold. It is a helpless feeling – that no matter what you do or say you can’t bring your loved one back.

There is a hole in your heart and it feels like your entire essence is gradually draining away – leaving you barren without the ability to hope, laugh, smile or feel anything ever again. This relentless pain comes and goes like the tides. One minute you may feel that you can make it another minute or day, and in the next second all hope and desire seems lost for eternity.

As I write these words, I am brought back to many happy times with both my mom and dad. Times we all believed would last forever – death would somehow be generous and spare us. But sooner or later, the end comes to all of us and we embark on a new beginning – leaving behind all our dreams, goals, accomplishments, fame, power and wealth as well as any greed, guilt, poverty, loneliness, sickness and fear.

Nothing I can say can ease your pain. Nothing I can write eases mine. But, in some ways, it helps to get the emotions out in the open. It doesn’t take much. …a spoken word that triggers a memory – causing the tears to come. A smell or sound and the sadness returns. It is hard to believe they are gone. It is painful to think that I will never again be able to share my fears or my successes with them. They are gone, but they will never be forgotten. Their lessons and love will always be stored in the recesses of my heart and mind. This, too, will pass for you. The pain will subside and the smiles will once again return. Do not rob yourself of this important time in your life. Get in touch with your emotions, feel them and express them, and then over time, learn to let them go.
