A rare peek into the reclusive life of Sage Sweetwater, wolfkeeper and firebrand lesbian novelist

Sage Sweetwater, wolfkeeper and firebrand lesbian novelist is tucked into the Wet Mountains in high-country Colorado. 

Sage acquired a male wolf cub over 12 years ago for the purpose of healing from a life crisis.  Eight months after the purchase of her Ellesmere Arctic white wolf Cassiar, whose bloodline is a descendent of the wolf who starred in Grizzly Adams, he was ready to produce offspring.  Sage acquired a female arctic wolf cub mate for him and put the female cub Kitari in an acre of government-regulation six-foot-high, another couple of feet on top of that with wire. The adult weight of Cassiar, wolf on the left, 135 pounds, Kitari 110 pounds.



In six months, Kitari gave birth.  Sage pulls the cubs from the mother before their eyes open and she bottle feeds them so the cubs will easily socialize and bond with humans and a human is the first thing they see when they open their eyes after about four to six weeks.  Sage builds straw houses for the wolf cubs out of stacks of straw bales to house them until they can go inside with the adult wolves.  All wolf cubs are born black in color and lighten each day thereafter.  Sage's white wolves are from Ellesmere Island.  They range from white to cream colored and have beautiful silver-tipped guard tails.  All wolves have a diamond shape midway up on their tail.  Sage now has four adult wolves, three have left this plane of life, one just recently, and so the journey has been completed for Sage.



In 12 years, Cassiar and Kitari have produced over 90 cubs.  Sage gave wolf school to qualifers before they were even allowed to make a purchase and a lifetime investment of a wolf.  Sage only placed the cubs in approved homes of women needing healing, battered women and women in crisis, women in need of a lifestyle change.  One of the cubs was expensively purchased by a woman who had lost her husband in a climbing accident.  One of Sage's favorite wolf clients is a woman who got a divorce and needed a lifestyle change.  The woman purchased a 58-foot houseboat on Lake Powell in Utah and gives riverboat tours.  She purchased the male cub she named Wintun, the Native America spelling, for to be a mascot aboard ship.

The wolves have taught Sage how to use direct eye contact which was once difficult for her.  Wolves communicate by direct eye contact and body language.  A wolf can NEVER be domesticated, only socialized.  Sage socialized all of her wolf cubs and imprinted with them at an early age through the music of the flute. 



Sage recorded her Harley-Davidson poems and stories THE BIKER CHRONICLES at her HOWLING RIDGE WOLF CAMP STUDIO and then took the voice into LIVE RECORDING STUDIO done by recording artist KELLY HART for mixing and mastering backed by Celtic renaissance music; banjoes, guitars, flutes, harps, dulcimers, and mandolins.  All of the stories and poems are tellings of Sage's past life riding her Harley where she has traveled the Colorado asphalt and weaved stories from inside and out of the gypsy wind, the legendary Milwaukee wheel.
