EXT. MANSON JR., RED JR. AND TURK JR.’S SHACK – SAME
Manson Jr. is out behind the shack shooting bottles off fenceposts with his left hand. He is wearing a BLACK CAPE and a SEQUINED BLACK AND GOLD MASK.
Red Jr. and Turk Jr. come out of the shack.
Manson Jr. has hit all the bottles in perfect shooting with his left hand.
MANSON JR.
Goddamn I’m good. Think I’m better with my left than I ever was with my right. This hook’s even good for holdin’ a rope.
RED JR.
When do ya they’ll notice?
MANSON JR.
They’ll notice—when somebody finds a horse drowned in the river—casualty of a God-fearin’ downstream current.
TURK JR.
Wrath is cheap—ten dollars worth of lumber, dime’s worth of nails and a few feet of sturdy rope.

EXT. TELEGRAPH POLE CROSS – SAME
At the site of the train crash Vade is hanging from a low telegraph pole in the shape of a cross.
CLOSE ON –- Vade is dressed in a WHITE TUNIC with a PURPLE ROPE SASH tied around her waist. Her WRISTS ARE TIED WITH ROPES to the board that makes the CROSS. Her head is tilted to the side. Her eyes are closed. There is BLOOD running from the corners of her mouth. There is a CROWN OF THORNS around her forehead. BLOOD is dripping from her forehead.
Jett Durango is on the other side of the train tracks just across from the telegraph pole cross where Vade is hanging. A long train is passing by.
CLOSE ON –- A black train car painted with a WREATH OF GOLD LILLIES ENTWINED.
The train passes. Jett sees Vade hanging from the telegraph pole cross.
SLOW MOTION –- Jett runs her horse to the tracks.
FREEZE FRAME:
Jett’s horse leaps over the railroad tracks in mid air.
MONTAGE
1. Vade tied to a chair in front of the blackboard facing a row of oak desks with a bandana over her mouth.
2. Vade rises from her church pew with her bible in hand and bolts through the double doors.
3. Vade edges her horse up close to the side of Jett’s horse. Vade leans over in the saddle and kisses Jett while they’re both in the stirrups.
4. Jett Durango and Vade are lying naked together in bed.
5. Vade is sitting in the bath tub reclining back in the soothing hot water. The oil lamp has a soft glow.
6. Vade dressed in TIGHT, LOW-SLUNG BLACK LEATHER PANTS and a SHORT BLACK LEATHER BOLERO JACKET that shows her navel leaving a space of bare flesh between the rise of her low-slung pants and the bottom of the bolero jacket. She is wearing a BLACK LOW-CROWNED ROUND HAT. She is wearing a BLACK GUN HOLSTER around her shapely hips with a pair of COLT PEACEMAKERS with 7 1/2 INCH LONG barrels.
7. Vade wearing a BLACK CAPE and a SEQUINED BLACK AND GOLD MASK around her eyes.
8. Jett and Vade are in bed with the whore.

BACK TO PRESENT DAY
INT. CELLAR UNDER THE BURNED OUT CABIN SHELL – SAME
PAN -- SHELVES against the wall are lined with CROCKS, APPLE BASKETS and JARS of FRUIT. There is a PAIR OF SNOWSHOES hanging on the wall. There are HORSE COLLARS AND BRIDLES hanging on the wall. There is a ROPE COILED ON TOP OF A WHISKEY BARREL. There is a big LARGE KEY PADLOCK WOODEN TRUNK STENCILED ‘THE POWDER RIVER HYMNALS’.
CLOSE ON -- There is a TREADLE and FLYWHEEL PRINTING PRESS.
It’s dimly lit. There’s an OIL LAMP BURNING. The lamp is sitting on a TREE STUMP WOOD-CHOPPING BLOCK with an AX wedged in the stump.
CLOSE ON –- VADE is lying against the cellar wall in a bed with clean white sheets. There is a quilt over her. She is unconscious. She has BLOOD and BRUISES on her neck and face.
Jett Durango is tending to Vade doctoring her of her injuries.
EXT. WATER PUMP – SAME
Jett pumps water from the RED-HANDLED WATER PUMP into a BUCKET. She walks back to the CELLAR DOOR LIFTED UP. She climbs down the cellar with the bucket of water and closes the lid cellar door behind her.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. CELLAR – SAME
Jett wipes Vade’s forehead and face with a wet rag. She cleans the dried blood from the corners of Vade’s mouth.
JETT DURANGO (O.S.)
Vade don’t leave me. Honey hold on. I need you. The Powder River Hymnals need you. My god, who did this to you?
SUPERIMPOSE:
A CROSS.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. CELLAR UNDER THE BURNED OUT CABIN SHELL – SAME
Vade stirs. She is in a POWERFUL out-of-body dream sequence hanging in limbo between LIFE and DEATH.
SCENE NOTE: (This Montage scene is an extremely spiritual angelic out-of-body experience. It is shot in SOFT FOCUS.)
1. Vade dreams she is helping a group of DISCIPLES in BROWN TUNICS across the WATER of the POWDER RIVER on a WOODEN ARK filled with GRIZZLY BEARS. The men are wearing BEARDS and LONG HAIR. The women are PALE in complexion, dressed in WHITE CLOAKS. They have LONG HAIR. The CHILDREN, boys and girls are SERAPHIM dressed in WHITE all with LONG BLOND HAIR. ALL are wearing BROWN SANDALS.
2. The ARK bottoms out in the SHOAL of the river.
3. A BIG SOW GRIZZLY comes toward Vade. The SOW GRIZZLY turns to WHITE like the coat of a polar bear. A LARGE, BRIGHT CIRCLE of GOLDEN LIGHT in a TUNNEL leading to a CAVE closes in and Vade is captured in the SPIRITUAL MAZE.
4. The WHITE BEAR turns into an ANGEL. The CIRCLE OF GOLDEN LIGHT becomes smaller and smaller and smaller closing in on Vade. The ANGEL fades out and disappears to the OTHER SIDE. Vade’s breathing gets shallower. She is hanging more on DEATH’S side.
Vade RISES up in the bed in the below-the-knee WHITE TUNIC. She has regained her consciousness.
CLOSE ON –- PAIR of BOOTS on the WALL SHELF.
Vade moves the quilt and sheets off of her. She walks to the wall shelf. She takes the BOOTS. She sits on the bed and puts them on her feet.
Vade opens the DOUBLE CELLAR DOORS. She climbs out to daylight. She is met with BLINDING, BRIGHT GOLDEN RAYS OF LIGHT.
FLASH CUT:
EXT. ON THE TRAIL - SAME
Riding beside Jett, SISTER atop her donkey is holding her WHITE CADUCEUS CANE high in the air for a message from God.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. GOD’S GROUND – SAME
Vade RISES in ‘THE RESURRECTION’. She has come back as the POWDER RIVER JESUS.
CLOSE ON –- SKY filled with BLINDING, BRIGHT GOLDEN RAYS OF LIGHT. Vade SHIELDS her EYES with her RIGHT HAND as a visor. She’s standing on the ground just outside the cellar.
TIME CUT:
EXT. GOD’S GROUND – SAME
Jett, Sister and Vade are sitting UNDER A TREE at Jett’s burned out cabin. They are BREAKING BREAD together and DRINKING WINE. Jett’s HORSE and Sister’s DONKEY are tied to a tree.
VADE
I’m sure as hell glad you have a cellar. I couldn’t have taken the heat out there on that cross. I have risen as the Powder River Jesus.
CLOSE ON –- REDDISH-PURPLE marks around Vade’s WRISTS.
Sister takes Vade’s upturned palms in her hands. She sees the permanent marks circled around Vade’s wrists.
SISTER
Your flesh has been marked with the stigmata—the wounds of Christ when he was crucified upon the cross. I can see it. You have been chosen.
VADE
Are they permanent scars?
SISTER
Yes, it is so. The stigmata have miraculously been reproduced on each of your wrists.
JETT DURANGO
It’s not just the bruising ropes of wrath, Sister?
SISTER
No, Jett. Vade carries the mark with her. It is a religious token bequeathed by the Christ.
VADE
I am the Powder River Jesus and I am the Voodoo Queen. I ride for the Powder River Hymnals. I was hung on that cross where those men—
Vade stops short of a confession. But Jett Durango finishes Vade’s sentence.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. JETT’S CELLAR – NIGHT
OIL LAMP is aglow.
Jett is sitting in a chair. Vade is propped up with pillows on the bed against the cellar wall. They are talking.
VADE
I saw an angel.
JETT DURANGO
When you were on the cross?
VADE
Here. When you went for Sister. The grizzly turned white and then it turned into an angel.
There’s a noise outside the cellar. Jett stands and pulls her PISTOL from the holster. She hands Vade her other pistol with the barrel in her palm giving Vade the pistol grip end.
JETT DURANGO
Something’s out there. Let’s go see.
Jett lifts up the double cellar doors slow. She climbs out. Vade dressed in the WHITE TUNIC follows behind her.
Standing just outside the cellar door in the LIGHT of the FULL MOON is the WHITE HORSE from the rancher’s corral.
The horse walks to Vade as she walks to it.
VADE
When the angel departs, the horse breathes lifeblood. Andalusian Jesus she’s a mare.
