Linton’s last conscious actions
were to continue holding his throat. As Linton fell over the third man, he slid back down the ramp, Yarbrough managed to jump back to the ledge where they rested on the way up. The fourth man and Linton fell into the chimney. The second and third soldiers joined Yarbrough on the ledge. "John Hanks, I’ll have your skin nailed to my shit house door by sundown tomorrow," screamed Governor Yeardly.
Braun searched all around the ledge, looking for a place that would offer an advantage. No other place would allow his men to reach the ledge other than up the chimney. Braun’s temper was in rare form when evening came. Looking up at the spot where Linton’s throat met Axel’s knife, Yarbrough said, “What do you think we should do?”
“Look. I didn’t sign on for anything like this. I’m scared as hell just being up this high. That’s no ordinary man up there. He’s more soldier than any of us. I’m going down.”
“The Colonel’s is going to me mad as hell.”
“Not near as mad as my wife would be if I got myself killed.”
