Singer George Michael was arrested again on drug charges--

My goodness--I used to be such a fan of Wham! I thought George Michael was the cutest thing I’d ever seen! And, what a voice!

How things change…

If you haven’t already heard, he was arrested again, on drug charges, after being found slumped over asleep at the wheel of his car at 3 a.m. Marijuana was found in the car.

A few months ago, when he was arrested (again on drug charges), he called it a ‘stupid mistake’.

After this most recent arrest, his life partner was interviewed, and is quoted as saying, “He’s okay. I just got him some McDonalds.”

Hmmm…

This might be a longshot but...I'd guess that he’s really NOT okay.

I can only imagine the lifestyle of an entertainer. It’s got to be one of the most hectic, schizophrenic lifestyles on the planet. Whether in public or not, they’re always ‘on’, especially since the paparazzi is always after a story. I imagine that most celebrities know that, for example, if they walk through their garden, and step on an ant by accident, tomorrow’s headline about them could read, ‘X Celebrity—Animal Killer’.

Some would say that all of the scrutiny is a small price to pay for the adoration and financial gain celebs get for being good at what they do. Nevertheless, in our souls we know that it’s got to be draining. As a writer, I’ve had several instances of my own ’15 minutes of fame’. A few times, I must admit that I was happy to go back to being a ‘nobody’. The pressure can be enormous.

We have to ask ourselves if we demand too much of our entertainers, particularly when it drives them to extremes like drug abuse, alcoholism, or suicide. As much as I have enjoyed George Michael’s music over the years, I am much more concerned about him as a human being than I am about him as an entertainer. And, I think most of his fans would feel that way.

In addition, while I admit to occasionally being interested in gossip about celebrities, I would surely lose interest if I felt that it was harming them. After all, as global citizens, it is becoming increasingly more important to follow the Golden Rule--do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. The world has, in recent years, become a much smaller, and a much more vindictive, place.

If I were George Michael, all I would want now is to be left alone so that I could recover and heal. And, that’s exactly what I think we should give him--space and privacy.

Hopefully, when he’s ready, and stronger, he’ll reemerge to dazzle and delight us again.
