David’s desk phone rang.
It was the Security Desk--
Linda was downstairs.
‘Yes, I’m expecting her’, he said.
‘Send her up.’
A few moments later,
Linda surfaced from the elevator.
After a brief kiss,
And the usual greetings,
David took Linda to his cubicle.
She commented on his new
Knick knacks with a smile.
She seemed impressed.
And, for the first time
In a long time
David felt free.
As a matter of fact,
He felt happy, even joyous.
Linda was exactly
What he needed--
Solid, normal…beautiful.
‘Well…ready to push off?’
He asked.
‘Sure. But, before we leave
Can I stop at the ladies room?
I’d like to freshen up.’
‘No problem.’
After leading her to the restroom
He returned to his cube.
The fragrance of Linda’s perfume had lingered,
And it smelled good.
He had an idea.
When Linda returned,
He abruptly kissed her, deeply and passionately.
She was surprised,
But returned his affection.
They separated
And she smiled at him.
‘Wow. What was that for?’
‘I just wanted to let you know how happy I am to be here
With you.’
She smiled again,
And it melted his heart.
He knew that he’d have good sex tonight--
If she’d let him…
While they were at the restaurant,
Julia called.
He left the table to take the call,
And explained to her that it was over;
Asked her to give his regards
To Uncle Serg—
And called Richard
The cop
To ask if he could sleep at his place
For a couple of weeks…
The next morning,
David returned to his cubicle
With a smile on his face
And a present in his pocket.
It was a photo of Linda.
He had asked her to be his girlfriend last night
And she had said yes.
She gave him a picture to put
On his desk
In his cubicle…
Richard the Cop
Had given him a new cell phone
And kept his old one.
Julia had called no less than 6 times
Since last night
After he broke off the relationship…
And, Richard the Cop was carefully documenting
Every call…
He logged into his email.
The manager in the manufacturing division
Had written to him again.
Could they do a phone interview
During his lunch today instead?
He was eager to fill the position…
And Tom,
His boss,
Walked by and gave him a big smile…
The kind of smile that let David know
The job was as good as his…
David posted Linda’s picture
And looked around…
His cubicle had never looked better.
And, for the first time,
In a long time,
He was content.
He worked hard that day
Got a lot done
And was satisfied with himself
At day’s end…
He knew that this was
Where he was meant to be.
Where he could make
The greatest impact.
He was good at what he did
And determined to become better.
As he shut down his computer
And prepared to leave for the day
He looked around his cubicle again,
And chuckled.
He had finally realized that
He had blamed this cubicle
For his real issue—
