In 1831, by hand-cranking a coil of wire between the opposing poles of a permanent magnet, Michael Faraday discovered the electrical generator.
Each rotation of the coil produced a similar output which was fed into chemical storage units.
Faraday's discovery gained much attention: generators and the means of storing electricity continued to improve.
The high point being the electrification of the 1893 World Fair in Chicago.
"On May 1, 1893, President Grover Cleveland pushed a button and near 100,000 incandescent lamps illuminated the White City."
But, as demand increased, DC current was found wanting.
Nikola Tesla solved the problem by eliminating the storage units and transmitting the original experience as alternating packets of energy:
DC became AC and the world is thriving because of it.
The universe is a generator of 100% efficiency and the more we liken to it the better the result.
AC has a long way to go before it even comes close to its prototype but at least Tesla put us on the right track.
