Alcero Golf article explaining that the successful plan for all golf shots includes the Triangle of Success through the Alcero Method from it's creator, Al Owens.
To manifest the kind of game you desire when you go to play your round of golf, it is important that you center your swing with yourself. Your swing is an extension of you, and if you are not in tune with yourself or your game the day you play, the chances you have of playing well are dramatically reduced.
When you stand on the range or the putting green as you are warming up before your round, it is important to feel and sense the club in your hands while you practice. Zeroing yourself in one how the club feels is very important. As you address the ball begin to notice three things that are in front of you. Your club, the ball and your target.
These three items, or the “triangle of success” as I call it, are the keys to delivering your shots to the areas you intend for them to go. Having one without the other will cause your performance to drop by one third of what the potential there is for you. All aspects of the triangle lead to the next, and they continue to travel back to you as the center.
The first section of the triangle is you. You are the individual holding the club, so the feelings and sensations you have are very important as you approach the shot. You need to sense the club in your hands. You need to feel the weight of the club head as you hold it. You need to feel the earth underneath the balls of your feet as you take your address. You need to be relaxed and comfortable as you prepare to make your shot.
Your body should be comfortable as you take your address. There should be no tension or pain in your lower back. If you find some, adjust your posture to lesson that tension or pain. Remember, if you feel it at address it is only going to cause you to react in your swing as you make your stroke, and generally that reaction is not the one you want, it is a reflex that happens in-voluntarily to prevent pain in your swing.
You also need to be comfortable with the ball. By this I mean you need to feel an invisible line from you heart or soul to the ball. This “connection” between you and the ball is very important. It creates the first bond in the triangle, between you and the ball. You need to see the ball in a very positive way.
Consider the ball to be part of your team. That may sound silly, but how many times have you stepped up to a shot and feared it going in the water, woods or bunker? Why would you put that thought in your mind? You must believe in yourself and the ball and the possible positive outcomes or great shots the two of you can make together.
After you have felt the ball connect with you, next you need to connect to the target. This is the second connection in your triangle of success. As you are taking your address and occasionally looking at your target, it is important that you sense and feel where you want the ball to land or end up. How many times have you played with someone that just steps up and hits it and wonders why it is not going where they wanted it to go? Did they ever know where that was?
I see this many times on the practice range, golfers hitting shot after shot. They don’t have a routine for each shot and are not aligned correctly to the target
(parallel to it). If that is wrong, then their perception of where the actual target is will most likely be off also.
As you work with the second bond, really begin to feel and see where it is you want your ball to land. Feel the club, feel your connection to the ball and sense and see the ball ending up where you want it to. When you are on the course, there is no time to think of swing thoughts. Your swing is ingrained in you. Your concern should be the outcome of the shot, where you want the ball to go.
The third part of the triangle of success is the target and you! You have to believe that the target and shot you have in your mind is possible. That sounds simple, but how many times has your ego told you to try this shot because someone of your age or size should be able to do it? Did you think it possible? If not, you have a dramatically reduced possibility of obtaining the outcome you desire because you did not believe in it, you do not resonate with the desired outcome. You were not committed to it.
You must commit to the shot, so if another shot feels better, change clubs or strategy to increase the chances for your desired outcome. So what if you have to go from 5 iron to 5 wood. If you feel more comfortable and confident with a certain club or shot….GO TO THAT!! Your chances are much better if you believe in a shot. Doubt and fear will get you nowhere.
The Triangle of Success is very dynamic, and yet so simple. These three areas must come together in order for your full potential to be able to come out. There is a powerful connection with all three, and it can really launch you to a different level in your golf game. Remember though, it is a game, if you hit a bad shot, let it go and move on to your next possible great shot. Lighten up…..and enjoy the game.
