A good way to continue to bargain
According to the Iranians, the Russians have already negotiated with the Americans an opportunity to avoid a U.S. attack against Syria. The idea came from the Iranians and Russians, who would guarantee that the chemical weapons would be either destroyed or transferred to Iran. To save time, they propose to Obama to submit the idea to the U.S. Congress, as an alternative to the attack. Among other things, according to the European press, the Europeans are opposed to any U.S. attack against Syria. Therefore Obama is isolated in his proposal to attack Syria and the Russian-Iranian proposal makes him face a dilemma. Here is the reason why the president does not hurry, even if Congress does not return until September 9.
I think the idea is good, but it needs to be strengthened by more than the Russian and Iranian security. With this proposal Obama will save time to seek other solutions and he may be able to obtain from the Russians a better deal for Syria and the United States. My question is, what guarantee do we have that Mr. Assad will show all depots of chemical weapons? Can we believe these two nations? Now we no longer talk of punishing Assad, nor how to stop hostilities between Assad's forces and the rebels. The latter have played a key role which lasted three years of fighting.
Now we understand why the president is pushing Congress to vote for the attack, as once he would have the Congress behind him, he would have a good card to play with the Russians and the Iranians. For this reason, I believe that Congress should back Obama. This proposal opens the way to real negotiations between Obama and Putin, who had always refused them, and could provide a solution to the Syrian problem.
