Found this recipe in my Father's things

5 lbs Tallow (lard, grease, or animal fat)

1 Can of Lye

1/2 Cup Borax (granulated)

1/2 Cup Amonia

4 Cups Water

Combine water

Pioneers commonly made their lye by burning pine logs into coals and perculated water through the charcoal ashes

Interesting. My grandparents made soap this way. No wonder Borax mines were a big deal back in the 1800s in the American West.

While watching the latest "Naked in Afraid," the couple found yucca, and, taking the root and grinding it, made a rudimentary soap.
