I was having a great day... until I looked in my rearview mirror
I used to be a frequent visitor to the local hospital because I was a kidney transplant patient, and I had to get my blood drawn and tested every two weeks. One morning I drove to the hospital as usual, parked in the patient parking lot and walked across the street to the hospital. A man walking down the sidewalk smiled at me, and I smiled back. I actually felt good that morning... I had no prednisone jitters or nausea from the cyclosporine I had to take for the transplant.
I entered the building and started down the long corridor towards the transplant clinic. Two more people smiled at me... had people always been this friendly and I'd never noticed it because I'd been sick?
I sat in the waiting room until my name was called, then went into the office to have my blood drawn. The nurses smiled at me, too. I had my check-up with my surgeon, and then I was free for the day. I left the building in good spirits, planning what I'd do with the rest of the day now that the needles were out of the way. On my way out to my car, another guy smiled at me. I thought, Wow, I must really look good today!
I got into my car and checked out my face in the rearview mirror-- and that's when I saw what everyone had been smiling about: On my forehead was one of the stick-on green stars I had decorated the inside of my car's roof with! It must have fallen onto my forehead when I'd been driving to the hospital. So while I'd been waltzing around the hospital thinking I looked really good, everyone had been giggling over the chick with the star on her forehead! My face turned bright red-- thankfully I was alone in the car! I thought I was going to die of embarrassment.
Later that day, I removed the rest of the stars from the inside of my car, just to be on the safe side. It had been bad enough to have one land on my forehead... I didn't want to take the chance of having one stick to my behind, too! Then I really would have died of embarrassment.
