Encouragement in training up children

The story of Martha and Mary found in Luke 10:38-41 reveals that we often prioritize what we think is important over spending time in total submission to the Lord. We often welcome Jesus into our lives, our homes, and our situations, but, are we too busy telling Jesus what we need rather than listening to him for instruction.

I can see Martha now, as so many of us, hurrying about being anxious and vexed by the multitude of distractions we face in our daily lives. Then I see Mary sitting humbly at the Savior's feet anxious over nothing, knowing that the words he speaks are spirit and life. It is in this position of worship, humility, intimacy, and earnest attentiveness that we receive the instruction, strength and wisdom to be trained and in turn train up the child. It is in this position that the next generation (our child, grandchild, or the village child) will understand the true riches and be sanctified (set apart for/by God in truth. If not, God's word gives this warning: If we do not teach the children, future generations will cease to follow His word.

"Give ear, O my people to My law; incline your ears to the words of My mouth, I will open My mouth in a parable, I will utter dark sayings of old, which we have heard and known and our fathers have told us, we will not hide them from their children telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and His strength and His wonderful works that He has done. For He has established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers, that they may arise and declare them to their children, that they may set their hope in God, but keep His commandments and may not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not set its heart aright, and whose spirit was not faithful to God (Psalm 78:1-8)

As we sit at the Savior's feet, may the glory of God establish the work of our hands toward generation next. We must bless them and teach them in love and in meekness being holy examples of God's witness in the earth whose spirit is found faithful to God...as we live,move and have our being in and out of season.
