“And Jonathan, Saul’s son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God” (I Samuel 23:16).
Just a simple word from God can bring somebody back to the plan He has for them. I remember a cleaning lady who worked for an Episcopal Parish for twenty years. She was excellent at what she did; however, no one really seemed to notice her – especially the priest in charge of the church. She so much wanted to please him and just a simple kind word from him would have really meant a lot to her. He never gave it to her. He always cast discouragement to her. One day I noticed how downcast she was and prayed about it. The Lord gave me this verse to give to her, “But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head” (Psalm 3:3). I wrote a short note to her and told her I noticed she seemed a little downcast, encouraged her and gave her this verse.
It wasn’t that much longer that she had the courage to find another job and leave employment for someone who would appreciate her (she let me know the note was a catalyst). I had no idea that this one simple act would have so much impact on her life. It wasn’t long after that her husband died and she was in a much better position to make it on her own. God truly takes care of all who put their trust in Him.
I hope that you never discount the seemingly small acts of kindness that you do for someone else. There are plenty of people who walk around with their eyes to the ground in discouragement when God really wants them to look up and see their King of Glory. “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle” (Psalm 24:7-8).
We have a strong shield and fortress for the things that come against us. Just as redwood trees are a major force because they stand side by side for strength, we too must stand with others through their battles and subsequent victories. Be an encourager today!
