I don't like Arranged Marriages. It seems so absurd and ridiculous to me.

First the parents, distribute their daughter's photos to various relatives, friends and marriage beaureaus or marriage brokers. When anyone likes the family background and likes the girl, they will come to a formal meeting that is arranged in girl's house which is called,"Marriage Looks".(Please don't laugh, this is a blind translation from telugu).

The family or friends who come with the boy(sometimes boy will be absent) ask the girl some questions either as a formality or to test the girl's nature.
Some parents give room for the boy and girl to talk with each other, if the boy is present.

Meanwhile they will start discussing(it is actually like a bargaining and sale) about dowry and the other money related issues(Jewelry,Dress materials and the other customs). A marriage broker will be there who acts as a mediator between the two parties for which he takes commission from both sides for it is his profession.

Usually in 99 out of 100 cases, the boy's family takes leave saying that they inform at a later date. Based on the weightage of money, the marriage will be fixed.(This is a bitter and naked truth. Whatever they say else are just sugar-coating words).

If males agree, then the girl's opinion will be negligible. No one ever truly cares about her.(This is not exaggeration. Most of the girls cannot express their true feelings with their father and mothers usually are in a worry to get their daughters married.)

My questions are:
Why the hell that the girl should express herself to an unknown person?
why should she say about her ideas, opinions and feelings to a person who
does not guarantee her that he will marry her?
Moreover, If we think sending our photos to various persons to get married is also a degrading thing.
How is it that each and everyone used to watch our photos in such a way as if they scan us?

But the thing is these feelings are not treated as feelings at all. People comment that we think much. But one should understand that we,female, too have feelings. We too have self-respect. We too have our own individuality.

No girl can ever be happy that their marriage is fixed on the weight of money.
But there is no way for her to protest. Because by hook or crook, by good words or harsh deeds, they make her agree for a life-long journey in a different vehicle(In-laws house) if not path is changed.

One thing anyone should agree: In India, they succeed well. They be united for one reason or other no matter how many obstacles come, how many disturbances occur.

I have two sisters and all three of us had arranged marraiges.Well they worked for us.Good thing is our dad had lot of selfrespect and did not distribute our photos or did we have any meeting arranged with our wouldbes, we did talk to each other after our official engagement ceremony. We all had One priority and that is no dowry. We are well educated and I told myself if I can buy my husband with dowry then he will be like another object I purchased in shop and objects loose attraction after some time and how can love someone who do not have selfrespect and is not confident in himself of hardwork and his abilities to be successfull on own. I pity all those people who depend on fatherinlaws or parents for support. For that reason I do appreciate the US system of being independent from young age. In the end i do believe in arranged marraiges as long as parents and the girls dont loose their selfrespect in the process and bow to the wishes of bridegroom.
we should all condemn dowry system and better educate our community.

When a child is born to a mother he/she does not know anything about her but still the child continues to live with her for the rest of the life, so is an arranged marriage. A man/woman does not know anything about the partner they will continue to live for the rest of their life. This is something i can freely talk to my mother and i can advise my daughter and grand children also. Reforms need to be done in a few ways in a few respects but i do not think every Tom, dic and harry like me can tell them. I would advise our younger generation to research in our Vedas, in our history and you will surely find a lot of meaning in our marriages. Chastity is important but Chastity not at the cost of knowledge says Swamy Vivekananda. Read about a few speeches of him yes, you will truly find a lot of peace and knowledge. We must try to make the reforms based on such great peoples/Gods ideas.

Anicient customs may not be amicable to the present generation. There are plenty opportunities to the youth to select their partner. There are merits and demerits in arranged marriages and in their self selections. And the present time is not yet ripe to abondon the old system totally.

Personally I dont support arranged marriages. I wouldn't want my marriage to be arranged. But in my pragmatic
opinion, 'Arrange Marriage' is still most probable way for majority of people in India to get married. Instead of trashing the system, why cant we think of some reformation, where the major problems are addressed and fixed ?

Ur points r absolutely correct. But lief is an adjustment. We may not get all teh things we want.. for ex. every day we want so many things to happen but how many things r really happening. Adjustment is better judgement. I saw many arranged marraige couples who are happy .. it's not a wonder. If u didn't get what u want.. like the thing which u got. Nobody is wrong , nobody is right.. & nobody is perfect. If arranged marraiges r a failure, just think about our parents generation.. they r so happy.. I saw many mnay couples.. Even though I don't like all these formalities which r expressed but I believe in arranged marraiges..
