This book is must reading.

Let Them Eat Shrimp: The Tragic Disappearance of the Rainforest of the Sea by Kennedy Warne. This is the best non-fiction book I ever read. Please consider reading this book based on my review. Shrimp are not just an appetizer, not just a way to make money, not just a study subject; they are highly advanced descendants of arthropods meaning bugs like cockroaches, fire ants, and wasps. American restaurants objectify food so shrimp are just another menu item in contrast to Asian restaurants where people pick something swimming around in an aquarium and suffocate it for a few seconds. If only every restaurant did that we would view food as living things. When Red Lobster does “All You Can Eat Shrimp” they are literally robbing Peter to pay Paul since wetlands that act as barriers to hurricanes and an income source for crabbers are being destroyed while armed thugs guard the shrimp farms from poachers and the press. The horrors of shrimp farming do not end with just damage to the wetlands or impoverished nations with corrupt leaders bribed to sell out naturel resources or shrimp raised under such horrible conditions they are lethal. It ends with people. There are more slaves today than in the nineteenth century. Thailand is so notorious for using slaves on shrimp boats that The United States banned Thai shrimp after a Pulitzer Prize winning expose by United Press International. Shrimp fishing is highly dangerous work even if workers are well paid. Shrimpers die all the time in tiny boats unequipped for rough waters while big chains get rich cashing in on the trend toward healthy food.. On the bright side American shrimper deaths are going down but for all the wrong reasons. Cheap imports from developing nations that have no free press and use violence to protect shrimp lords are destroying the domestic shrimpers not to mention oil spills, dispersants, and hurricanes. Shrimp are not socially conscious consumers. Tofu and Boca burgers will not satisfy their discriminating pallet. Researchers watched in shock as shrimp like creatures devoured a whole pig leaving only the bones. Shrimp farms devastate the ocean by taking out millions and millions of fish to feed their cash crop. Shrimp have become big business. This book illustrates the horrors of the Shrimp industry.
